    1911s

I'm a total newbie when it comes to 1911s. Up until a month and a half ago, I never had any desire to own one due to the fact that it is just not modern looking. One day I was browsing through a couple of sites and saw one at a very decent and affordable price so I picked it up. Had it shipped to my FFL and drosed it. Heck, if I didn't like it how much harm would it be. The most it would be is that I'll be out maybe a hundred or two hundred bucks after I sell it if it doesn't suit my taste right?

So after it was drosed and picked it up after the 10 days waiting period, I took it to the range. Let me tell you, after owning several Glocks, Sigs, and S&W MPs and wheel guns I wished I wasn't as hard headed like I was before. I didn't know what got into me that day, but after going through 8 magazines I was punching out a hole the size of a lemon. I saw paper from my target flying off after I squeezed the trigger. Nothing I've seen from my Sig P220 , S&W MP45, nor Glock 21 SF.The grip felt so nice and tight in my hands. The recoil of .45 caliber felt like it was milder than 9mm coming out of a 1911. Trigger is crisp and short. Target acquisition was quick. Nothing like I felt with any of my Glocks, Sigs, nor S&Ws. I guess you can never go wrong with the classics!

Well , I'm hooked! I feel like I took the line, bait, sinker, and even swallowed the pole! In the next couple of months, there will be a 9mm and .40 in the 1911 platform coming my way. But before I go through with all the shopping sprees, I have a few questions for the experts.

    1. About how many thousand rounds will an average 1911 last?
    2. Are 1911s as reliable as Glocks?
    3. How many thousand rounds have you put through your 1911?

I'm still in the process of deciding whether to get rid of most of my Sigs, all S&W MPs. No Glocks though. I'm still kinda attached to them.

You own wheelguns and thought the 1911 did not look modern enough?

How does it not look modern? Is because it's not plastic?

Seems to me they have more things in common with black pistols than not; Barrel, slide, trigger mag release, ejection port, sights etc........

Sounds like those rocket scientists at Evan's Gunsmithing that talked smack on single shot rifles, saying 100 year old technology is worthless, this happened while they were standing next to there Evan's for sale tactical bolt guns (125+ year old technology) and a case full of 1911's.

1.) Millions, if you replace the wear parts. You'd go broke long before the frame or slide would give out.
2.) No. They can be almost as reliable, but their intrinsic design parameters aren't the same as a Glock. They can be NEARLY as reliable, though. Millions of people in the past and now put their life on the line to 1911s. Some of the most highly trained people do, too.
3.) I have a few, some have more than others. I have an old Colt that has at LEAST 50,000 rounds through it.

No trigger can outdo the 1911 in pistols. It's crisp as can be and can be made very light.

        Agree with above.

        1) A steel framed 1911 probably can't be worn out in one average person's lifetime

        2) No way - Glock is the AK of pistols - tough to make 'em not function. However, a properly set up and handled 1911 is plenty reliable. Get one that hasn't been "improved" by a backyard 'smith...

        3) I have put severl thousands through mine (I have more than one). Love 'em!

Besides the Desert Eagle which only recently showed up on the market again, are there any semi-autos in 357 mag?

By the way, which 1911 did you get? Brand? Configuration (Full size, etc.)?

It and the conversions have been on the market for a LONG time. It didn't just recently show up.

Yes, there have been other 357 semi autos, none of which are still in product (as far as I know) nor are they on the CA approved handgun roster.

Do you know why it is called the "1911"? Because that is the year that it was officially adopted by the US Military as their standard sidearm.

The pistol is now almost 100 years old.

How long will a 1911 last? Well, there are many 1911s around from those years that have been through multiple wars and still shoot just fine today, about a hundred years later.

                        Does that answer your question?

Don't do that. Why would you sell off perfectly good guns? Sure the 1911 is king, but variety is the spice of life!!!

Actually, the vernable 1911 was designed and built in the late 1890's. Making the design and production over 100 years old. Yes it was adopted officially in 1911, hence the designation.

                          As per wikipedia. . . . .

During the end of 1899 and start of 1900, a test of self-loading pistols was conducted, which included entries from Mauser (the C96 "Broomhandle"), Mannlicher (the Steyr Mannlicher M1894), and Colt (the Colt M1900).

This led to a purchase of 1,000 DWM Luger pistols, chambered in 7.65mm Luger, a bottlenecked cartridge. These would go on field trials but ran into some issues, especially in regard to stopping power. Other governments had also levied similar complaints, which resulted in DWM producing an enlarged version of the round, the 9mm Parabellum (known in current military parlance as the 9x19mm NATO), a necked-up version of the 7.65mm round. Fifty of these were tested as well by the U.S. Army in 1903. . . . .

Following its success in trials, the Colt pistol was formally adopted by the Army on March 29, 1911, thus gaining its designation, M1911 (Model of 1911). It was adopted by the Navy and Marine Corps in 1913. Originally manufactured only by Colt, demand for the firearm in World War I saw the expansion of manufacture to the government-owned Springfield Armory.

I disagree about the reliability vs. glock thing. If you have a 1911 that's properly set up, it is as reliable as any automatic there is if not moreso.

Got my springfield mil-spec because I wanted a historical gun.

I couldn't believe how well I shot it, how good it felt, how soft the "rolling" recoil was, and how much I just loved the damn thing.

There's just something about those 1911s.
