    Need a Safe

"Not another safe thread!" Look, there, I said it for you to save you time.

Anyway, after googling through the archives (the forum search engine is beyond bad), I haven't really been able to answer my question.

I need a medium sized gun safe and I'm looking to spend $500-$800. It can't be too big or heavy, because I live in an upstairs apartment and so I need to be able to get it into and out of the apartment when I move. (So ~500lbs max). I would like it to be roughly a "24 gun" sized safe.

I really liked the Cannon Challenger (http://www.tractorsupply.com/hunting...pacity-1027670) at Tractor Supply, but they won't ship to CA and the closest one is much too far.

My next choice is the Winchester safe at Costco for $550.

I also heard Costco puts their Bighorn safes on sale pretty regularly and that would include shipping to the curb. (http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product...at3373&topnav=)

Basically, I need some help. If anyone has had one of these safes, I'd be interested in feedback on them. If you have any other suggestions in the price range, that'd be good too. Please don't tell me to buy a $12,000 safe, I can't afford it. Please don't tell me to get the biggest safe known to man, I do't have room for it. I need it to be in this price range and roughly this size. Some safe is better than no safe, right?

    General Criteria:
    - $500-$800
    - Not too large to get into an upstairs apartment (<500lbs)
    - Roughly "24 gun" size
    - Delivery would be nice, but not necessary

ETA: I'm in Riverside, so any local shops you can recommend would be good too.

I was in the same situation as you years ago. I would get the least expensive Liberty Centurion or Revere model that meets your needs and space available. Note your most likely going to make a lot of noise getting anything more than about 300lbs up the stairs and into your apartment. Maybe try to get the safe into your place when the least number of neighbors are home? You want to try not to advertise the presents of your safe if possible. Also get something that is CA DOJ approved. If you can hide it in a closet all the better.
Then, someday if you move to a bigger place or buy a home either sell the smaller safe or use it to store your ammo. Thats what I did when I bought my house. Bought a nice Sturdy safe for the firearms and all my ammo goes in the old safe. Good luck.

I recommend Sportsman Steel Safes and Boswell Safe and Vault to move it.

Nice info lib. Wish I saw that when shopping.

OP when doing all this searching everyone reccomenda one of 4 safes in that range with a 24 gun copacity.. And swear one is nicer than the other.. Come to find out they are the same exact safes with a different sticker and buy it from a huge factory who seeks basic safes to different companies and they just resell them...

The Winchester 24 gun is exactly the same as my bull dog I bought locally and same as the liberty safes and black bell or who ever they call them selves the basic safes all have to same burn times same specs to a t and I mentioned that and the guys at the shop said yea they are all the same we buy them from so and so and put out logo on and call it a day.

I was in the same exact situation as you.. Only problem is I have so much ammo mags and parts along with long guns and pistols I'm almost out of room (90% cause of ammo and shells and magazines I have)

Realistically they hold about 10 long guns if stacked right and about 12 to 20 hand guns unless your like me and all of your cubbys and door pockets are taken. I'll snap a photo when I get home.

But look at my thread when I was looking hope it helps.. Oh and my safe is quality it's not top dollar but it's nice than I expected. With a little rough edges on the carpet gluing and stuff but it's simple fixedly you can repair or replace your self for $20 at home depot in a few years and do it better.

Watch the ads for turners, ammo bros, bass pro shops.
buy local. Shipping is too expensive. You might want to consider a lighter safe. 200 to 300lbs.
Been gone too long. It's been 15 to 20 years since i had to shelf my guns. Those early years sucked.

I went with the Bighorn 19ECB while on sale from Costco, and was a good choice (except it's now too small lol) for my situation. Like you, I'm upstairs and rent, so a fully built safe is out of the question.

Curbside delivery, in your budget, fits in a closet, and it's a really nice safe with good fit and finish.

And you can take the door off easily to make the stair climb easier - my buddy and I took it up about 12 stairs, then I just slid it on the carpet into the room and location. Highly recommended!

Turners has the champion gun safe. It has a nice glossy finish and they had a medium sized 24 gun safe for $800. I don't remember the weight exactly but it was @ 500 or just alittle over.

So, at this point I've basically settled on either:

Sentry 2459 which I found for $599 with free shipping on Amazon. Not fire rated, but much lighter because of it at 300lbs.

                    or

Cannon S19 which I found for $799 with free shipping on Amazon. It's fire rated and weighs 400lbs.

The Cannon is nicer, but it's also $200 more and I will definitely be moving at least once or twice in the next couple of years. So, I'm leaning to the Sentry. I figure when I finally get a real place, maybe get a bigger, nicer safe then. What do you guys think?

Whatever you get, skip the glossy finish. Moving a couple of times will scratch it up quite a bit. Go for the flat colors.

I can guaran-dam-tee you ya ain't gonna fit 24 long guns in that safe without dingin' the crap outta them. I recently got the same size Cannon and I would say MAYBE 13 long guns if the nice ones were in socks. Scopes & such might lower that number.

FWIW the Cannon has longer fire rating and lifetime guarantee, plus I was able to get it at my LGS. IMO the extra $300 was worth it.

I got a stack on 16 gun safe for around $400. Not fireproof, weighs a tad over 100 pounds. I reccomend getting a bigger one than what you need. My 16 gun is full with 8 long guns and ammo cans

One of the smaller American Security safes that Turners frequently has on sale will suit you just fine. Great quality too.
