Car travel with a gun

So the wife is taking a car trip to Idaho. I figure most of the night driving will be in Utah. Now that's not exactly dangerous territory but she wants to bring a firearm. It appears in Utah it's legal to have a loaded handgun in your car. Does anyone know if this is true? It'll be in a case that is locked certainly in CA but if you need something for protection a locked case is not so great so eventually she may unlock it. And yes she knows how to handle one but we're going to the range next week. Which will be odd for me I haven't been to an official range in years.

Any thoughts appreciated.

there is little chance she will need a firearm while driving. keep the case on the seat next to her, locked and the firearm unloaded while in CA. check Utah homepage on ar15.com if they do not have their own .com forum.

she really only needs it when she stops to sleep or rest.

Look up the local laws. Dont do what we think. Do what the laws say..

Because if you want to know what I think have one loaded in reach in EVERY state.. But again back to my statement.. Do what the law says not what I think.

I would think that for the extra security and comfort a room would be worth it to me and personally if it were my Wife I would insist she stop at a safe place enroute.
