Clock wise vs Counter Clock rifling?

    Enlighten me here please...

    Hi,
So this weekend during a hunting trip with the old man and some of his buddies there was a good conversation that got started Saturday night during camp. They talked about the previous year hunt stories and brought up a friend who shot a 300lb+ bear using his 22-250. 90% of us were in complete state of BS attitude. But after having a key witness who was with the guy swore his sick daughter, wife and horse that it was true. Some of the folks that know the guy who shot the bear also know his rifle and say the reason is that his rifle has counter clock wise rifling which creates a stronger trauma upon impact.

So I guess my questions are:

Does a counter clock wise rifling rifle make a bullet act different upon impact? Or change the ballistics data of a bullet?

Why does counter clock wise rifling even exist?

If my take my regular clockwise rifle below the equator would that be consider a counter type of rifling. Take "the why those the toilet flush counter clock wise in Australia law of science"

If you throw a football with a left hand or right hand, it would spin differently, but it would still fly the same.

Same thing with a bullet, no?

    Sounds like BS to me.

You do know that toilets don't flush the opposite way south of the equator due to the coriolis effect, right? You can make a toilet that doesn't swirl in either direction.

Also, the rifling direction thing sounds like nonsense.

Nothing I've ever seen or read would indicate that it does. I'm willing to bet not.

In theory, yes. If you're really bored or need something to put you to sleep at night, check out Bryan Litz's book on the subject: http://www.appliedballisticsllc.com/...files/Book.htm

The bottom line though is yes "spin drift" is real, and yes it is directly related to the direction of your rifling. But no, unless you're firing at 1000+ yards with bullets than hang in the air for 30 or so seconds, you'll notice about a hundred other things about the ballistics of your shot before you need to worry about spin drift.

One is for shooting north of the equator, the other is for shooting south of the equator. Just like the way the water rotates when you flush a toilet.

Counter clockwise rifling exists because of Mr. Isaac Newton. Newton's third law of motion mentions "equal and opposite forces".

First, let's establish that rifling exists to twist a projectile to maintain flight. Second, let's refer to Newton's third law of motion. And lastly, let's acknowledge that left-handed people exist.

            You figure out the rest.

The twist counter-acts the coriolis effect depending on whether you're above or below the equator. Everybody knows that. Without it, the bullet wouldn't spin properly but be thrown out of control by gravity and the swirling toilet water/drain effect it imparts to objects above ground.

Seriously, the direction of twist makes no difference to the lethality of a bullet.

If you have a fast enough twist barrel you can load heavy bullets of soliid construction like the 70 grain Barnes TSX and kill a bear.

Polar bears have been killed by Eskimos who drive their boats up against a swimming bear and shoot a 22 rimfire into their ear canal.

The direction of twist does not matter. Its the amount of twist that makes all the difference.

Twist direction will dictate which bullet travles (left or right) due to spin drift

Just don't be North of the equator and fire into a South of the equator still flushing toilet. The resultant vortex will cause Venus's moons to crash into each other. And we certainly don't want that!

I know that RRA does counter-clockwise rifling on the bore for their lefty guns. They say its a true lefty ;p
