How Far can a Steel Target be Heard

I'm curious how far a steel target can be heard after being struck by a bullet? I plan to make a few steel targets tomorrow and would like to place them between 300-600 yds. Will I be able to hear a hit with a .223?

Depends on ambient noise/other shooters, but yeah, you should be able to hear it

Depends on surrounding noises weight/size of bullet spot hit if it's hanging or solid a lot comes into play no real solid answer.

Under 800 yards on a calm day you should be able to hear sometime

I was able to hear the report from a mild steel target hanging at 100yds when hit with .22lr, out of my Buckmark pistol. I would think that you should be able to hear the report from 300+ with the .223. Although, wind, surrounding noise, etc., may obscure the report. Give it a try.

Depends what you hit it with, and how hard you hit it.

Based on Physics. Temperature! surrounding objects (trees? rocks? Flat land?) Shooting from elevation up to down or down to up or flat? How good is your hearing? what kind of ear protection are you wearing? Type of ammo? is the steel flat or round? is it a gong? how high will the steel be off the ground etc.

300-600 shouldn't be a problem in majority of the time.

Even with foam ear plugs in I can easily hear the "plunk" off our steel clangers at 700 & 1000 yards with a .308 - never tried shooting my 5.56 stuff past 600 so I cannot say whether they would be audible.
