After a range trip, unlock and load your guns!

Here is an interesting one for my fellow Calguns members. Last night, while the wife and were sitting on the couch, I was complaining about the lack of decent television on. I noticed a the sound of a helicopter circling in the air not too far from our house. This isn't as unusual as I wish it was.

Then, we could hear what sounded like a voice on a bullhorn. After maybe fifteen seconds, my very pregnant wife gets up and opens the front door so she can hear better. I ask her what the guy with the bull horn is saying?

"I can't make everything out, only phrases."
"Well, what the can you make out?"
"Something like, call 911 immediately if you see a guy wearing a black jacket. and some other stuff."
The helicopter is almost above our house.
"Well shut and lock the ******* door!"

I jump up and remember I had recently went to the range and hadn't had time to strip and clean everything. In fact, my stuff was still stashed in my range bag! I have never unlocked a padlock and loaded a mag for my Springfield so fast in my life. I was stumbling with the key for a second and almost whipped out my knife and cut the gun out of the case I had it locked in.

As I was doing this, I swearing at myself for being so stupid for not following proper post range cleaning procedures. I am never just throwing my range bag in the closet again! Don't make the same mistake I did all.

Normally, the wife frowns and openly dislikes my firearms. I was amused that watching a TV show with my 1911 on the coffee table is suddenly all right and even a good thing. No I didn't not take the opportunity to give her a hard time about it either. I know most of you will be disappointed I didn't, and the few members that know me personally won't believe I was on my best behavior. But, I have learned the hard way antagonizing a woman that is eight months pregnant is comparable to sneaking up on a mother Grizzly and smacking it in the butt. If you are lucky, death will come quick.

I think I know what the problem is, not enough guns. When I go to the range, it's about a 2-3 day cleaning process, I don't even put them back together until I'm sure the barrel is clean. My HD guns get cleaned about twice a year, and very seldom go to the range. Sounds like a great excuse to get another 1911 to me.

I always keep one mag loaded after a range trip. Sounds like my paranoia has found a reason.

Sounds like it was a fun night.

I always keep three to four loaded guns after a range trip, just not the ones that I shot. I still say, not enough guns.

That's just for the trip home. When I get home, I clean up and reload my mags.

And on the trip home, it's not one loaded mag, total... it's one loaded mag per.

I'm sitting on the porch having a smoke reading this with my GLOCK 17 concealed on my hip semi-cocked and ready to ROCK.

An extra 12 ga propped in closet corner (or my other clever spot) works for me. 870's and mossbergs are easily replaced...like consumables.

I've identified the problem. You don't own enough guns!!!

If you loved your family you would make sure you have too many guns to bring all of them to the range, meaning there is always something left in the safe with a loaded mag next to it.

You better fix that problem right now.

Sounds too me like you "need" another safe, maybe a wall safe with a new firearm in it, just in case this happens again...
