Snow?
After living in the Tahoe / Truckee area for 20 or so years, I can tell you that the snow will be removed from I-80 as soon as it hits the ground. Drive slower if there is white stuff on the ground and you'll be OK. Don't worry about the snow, just make sure you go and see what a "free" state gun show looks like. I went to the "Cal Expo Gun Show" last year and was so disappointed that the only reason I will ever go back would be to purchase Ammo!

If I were to go, I wanna go straight thru without a 4 hr+ trip to cross the pass. This trip is for R&R as well as the show, so I don't wanna spend a whole buncha time in slow traffic - that's problematic enough getting out of the Bay Area.
Can anyone convince me that, at around 3:30pm (the time I'd get "into the hills" past Auburn/Colfax area) it'll be OK?
Yes, it's the Big Reno Show at the Hilton - Fri, Sat, Sun.

At this point in time there is a 30% chance of rain Thursday thru Saturday, 20% Sunday. This may change for the +/-. Temperatures in the teens friday means clear skies, clouds keep the temps warmer. Storms come in warm and leave cold. After 20 years in Tahoe, I know.
P.S. Don't believe what the TV reports say!!! ONCE they reported 2' new snow in Truckee and I had 1/2" on my deck that overlooked all of Martis Valley. (Truckee airport)

Well I'm in susanville, which is about an hour and 15 minutes out of reno, and it seems as though almost all the storms we've had this year only seem to drop snow in the morning, and by afternoon it's stopped and is melting. And like renron said, they plow the roads as soon as the snow starts sticking. And this year the snow hasn't really been sticking."There are over 550,000,000 firearms in worldwide circulation, that's one firearm for every 12 people. The only question is, how do we arm the other 11?" -Lord of WarComment

The problem at that time of day really isn't the weather, it's the large number of idiotic, impatient drivers all trying to go skiing. If you can delay a few hours it makes life much easier. Stop in Auburn / Colfax for dinner.Rob Thomas - Match Director NCPPRC Tactical Long Range Match

How about the folks driving up Saturday morning
Do to work, I will have to leave early (6AM) on Saturday morning and coming back on Sunday. Should I expect a traffic jam?

I don't want to kill the optimism because I don't think there's a need to...
I went up last April, went up after work on Friday, and trying to beat a storm coming in. If I had just gotten off work at noon and headed up, I would have been fine. I got up there and CHP had the highway closed for some reason, there wasn't more than an inch on the road, and I've seen them let traffic right on through for that before. We waited like an hour and they opened it up, but only with chains / cords. We ended up pulling up to the Hilton around 4 am. Having driven in snow a jillion times, it was plenty safe for no chain restrictions, just drive slow.
This is going to be the weather page to watch, they have forecasts as far out as 10 days. Let's keep in mind that really forecasts can't get too accurate until about 3 days out. All the sources were all screwed up and wrong about this past weekend. But once Wed rolls around, we'll get a pretty good idea of what we're looking at. Also, going over 80 even with chains is not a problem except for the traffic jam to put them on. Not any worse than what's in the bay area every morning and afternoon.Originally posted by Rob454I would bang her till her insurance kicked in. I like to get 'over the hump' to avoid night ice or worse weather conditions. Always seems that if it gets late/dark, the WX gets worse in borderline situations.

The CHP sets chain control for the flatlanders that don't know how to drive in snow.Originally posted by sierratangofoxtrotunionI went up last April, went up after work on Friday, and trying to beat a storm coming in.
