    Gun transfer

Hey guys, I have a few questions.

My father-in-law passed away today, I know of one gun he has, but there are possibly more. I never really talked guns with him.

I think he wanted my son, currently age 12, to have at least the .44 he had. Now, not only has he passed away, but his wife is in the beginning stages of dementia, so we will have to put her in a home soon.

So my question is, how can the gun (possibly guns) be transfered to me, to eventually go to my son when he's old (and responsible) enough? Or should they be going to my wife? Would they go to her by right of inheritance? Also, how do they need to be registered?

    thanks,

If your mother-in-law is in California, then you should have her transfer the firearm to your wife and then your wife should transfer it to your son when he's 18. You'll need to fill this out and send it in with the $$ at each transfer. Even if your mother in law is not fully with it, the transfer is legitimate.

Also note that long guns over 50 years can just be transferred between CA residents with no paperwork. I mention it as you never know what your father in law may have in the closet.
