Gun Safe recommendation

I'm planning to buy my first AR and I was just wondering what you guys could recommend for a gun safe? I live in a apartment that look like townhouses. thanks!

How many firearms do you plan to place in your safe? If it's just the AR you can get a small California approved safe. It can hold maybe 8 long guns.

It's hard to give recommendations without a price point. There a lot of great safes, but is it within your budget?

You left out the amount of money you're looking to spend and the size you're looking to get.

$300? $2000? Only needs to hold 6 guns or 30? Is there a space restriction where it's going to go? Can you fit a solid safe where you want to put it? What type of lock do you want? Does it matter which side the door opens from?

There are a lot of details that we can't fill in for you.

I recommend Cannon if you are going for a decent priced safe, their replacement policy is the best in my opinion.

Sorry, total newbie here. I am planning to spend less than $500, I'm only planning to get an AR for now and maybe an AK down the road. I could place it in my garage but i can also put it by our closet as long as it's not to wide (maybe 2 ft wide the most, if there are any safe like that)

Buy a larger safe than you think you need. Guns breed in the darkness of the safe.

For that money, lots of decent choices at Home Depot, Lowes, Costco, Turners etc.

Well, you can also tell her that you can put other valuables in it besides guns of course. Jewelry, documents, etc.

Note that I'm not saying you ever actually have to buy her any, but that's another hurdle for you to get over at a different time

Buy the biggest, strongest safe you can afford.

I made the mistake of buying a "14" gun safe when I had only three rifles. I thought, wow, that's a lot of room to expand. Now I'm absolutely full up and have rifles on the way...which means I'll have a safe for sale pretty soon...

Go with what BruinGuy said. I purchased a "17" Liberty Safe about 5 months ago and just now ran out of room. Even thought it may say "XX" figure it may really only hold about half that many. This is especially true if you have alot of EBR's with optics.

Very true, buy the largest you can fit in the place you want to put it. I bought a a 16 long gun safe a year ago and now is full. I'm not buying a larger one because as soon as I do I know that extra space just has to get occupied ASAP. Look at Steel Water Gun Safes

I agree with others that have commented on this thread. A safe is an investment, it isn't something you refresh every 3 years or so. People even have passed down safes generations after.

Opinions vary on safes, but I have to say that all safes can be broken into given the time.

Is fire-lining important to you? Are you also putting things other than guns, such as important document or jewelry?

I went with a mom and pop company called Sturdy Safes and they sell by word of mouth. Currently my safe is bolted down with concrete anchors in the basement. It stands about 5 feet tall, somewhat short, 7 gauge, firelined, but weights over 700 pounds. Took five guys to bring it down the basement.

Specifications don't lie with safes. Safes are made with steel, you can't lie about weight.

I personally researched a lot about safes, and was about to get a Canon because of the lifetime warranty. The "bang for your buck" won, with Sturdy Safes. I would say don't skimp the money on purchasing one, such as do NOT buy a stack-on filing cabinet. A "saws-all" or a pick-axe can easily can-open those as well with some other thinner gauged side-walled safes.
