i have a set of plates. cost me $220 total shipped to me, while they are steel and about 8 lbs each, a few friends shot the ***** out of them and they took it all, 5.56 ball and green tip 7.62 x 51, 7.62 x 54r ,5.45, 9mm and more.

i am very happy with them and is useful for exercising to!

Im just curious of why you would need it in the first place? Is it just for wow factor just to say you have body armor or is there a secret Gecko45 fetish or something? When do you expect to find yourself in a fire fight and need body armor unless you plan on robbing a bank or something? Maybe I just live in a nice area and never expect that I would need it.

Lots of folks (including myself) require body armor for many reasons. Some of it is a tacticool factor i guess.... but it really doesnt matter now does it? Are you offended by it or something?

Years ago I took a class and the instructor mandated armor

He explained that when he was a little boy he read books about knights fighting dragons. The knight would take a sword and a shield.

Should things go bump in the night where you feel the need to pick up a pistol, flashlight and call 911 to ask them to stay on the line while you investigate the noise, why not also pick up you shield????

I understand why duck hunters and sporting clay shooters have many shotguns. My cousin who is a big clay shooter does not understand why one would want to own a pistol, semi auto rifle or mags that hold more than 10 rounds.

I think that a vest with a holster, mags, spray and a light make a lot of practical sense if you are one who feels like they will investigate bumps in the night.

+1 for steel defender. they are heavy but they can stop! i have a pair my self but also have level3 underneath. i wish they made 6x8 side plates.

They do sell 6x8 side plates, about $30 each.

Sounds heavy, the ceramic plates weigh less, but they are fragile. I'm thinking you don't have to be so careful with these steel plates. If you don't have to run around in them all day, they might just be a inexpensive alternative. thanks for the link!

Almost anyone can get a NV, FL, UT or WA CCW permit

If not, then you can find vests at some gun shows. Never
Buy a no name brand. One of the gun show sellers at the orange county show had a lot of used LEO vests. They also had vests with no names on the carriers that are of unknown orgin and no proof of DOJ testing

They have a paper certificate but no true DOJ or name manufacturer labels. Avoid these

You can also find used vests on Ebay

Scottsdale gun club had purchased an overrun of level 4 plates and carriers a while ago

Lots of sources and i personally would never own a steel plate as armor

Two reasons- metal detectors and metal spauls. When the bullet hits metal- it explodes-
Fragments into your arms and eyes would be... Not good
Kevlar traps the bullet and fragments

Steel is much more durable. Ceramic will fracture with most shots, limiting its effectiveness. However ceramic is lighter, for most instances ceramic will do the job.

I'm sure there's more then that, but that's the basics.

just run trauma soft inserts in front of the steel plate to limit the shrapnel effects.

and to the gentlemen that asked why i have BA, accidents can happen at any time, especially on ranges with people who may or may not have firearm exp, so i choose not to be shot in the back or at all period

ceramic is more "updated technology" so to speak, but some of the plates have to be taken care more carefully because they can be damaged from drops and such.


steel is very durable in any weather and conditions and is pretty good at stopping rounds, but also causes fragmenting when struck with rounds.

im currently looking into a US palms vest and just throw my plates in it as it is smaller and more easy to conceal.

i run with my plates to add weight but running with a vest on draws very odd looks! haha
