$3K to spend - Decision Time

So, I've been thinking about ordering a custom Wilson Combat CQB 1911 and I keep coming back to how expensive they are.

I know they are nice guns but for the same price as a Wilson 1911, I can get all of these guns:
    • Kimber Custom II
    • S&W M&P 9mm
    • Mauser k98 - Collectors Grade
    • Remington 700 in .308 with scope

What would you do? Drop the money on a custom 1911 or buy 4 other guns on my list?

That Wilson will be worth half what you paid for it the day you bring it home. Buy a used one. Sure you see people trying (and failing) to get their money back when they place for sale ads; but they never sell. You might have a hard time finding a used one for sale because peoples pride gets in the way once they realize they're going to take a major bath if they ever sell. I've seen high dollar Wilsons sit on gunbroker for over a year without selling.

I could not agree more on a used one
I Paid about 2200 for a used one. Shot in maybe 300 rounds and sold it for what I paid a few years later

I spent 3k on the s&w registered magnum. I saw a box in similar condition to mine sell for over $500 on gunbroker recently. The longer I am in this game the more I appreciate the rare and hard to find items. I also found these same items hold or increase in value on a predictable basis. You buy any of the items listed in your post besides maybe the k98 and the value will drop immediately. Find an area of collecting that you love and put the money towards the nicest condition item that is not longer in production and buy that. You will always be able to find a kimber, m&p and a 700.

If you were thinking of ordering that "collector grade" K98 from mitchell's mausers, pass on them. They are fakes.

What is it that makes you shake your head? They are very fine firearms.

What do you mean by custom? I dont consider a CQB a custom firearm(will wilson build one to your specs?). My father has a CQB and my older brother has a tactical supergrade. I shoot a springfield mc operator and it is more than enough gun for me. If I where going to shell out that kind of cash you can be sure I would get a true custom(heirloom, SVI, chuck rogers, etc). I also don't buy that they depreciate at a greater rate than other firearms. Hard to sell? yes, so is everything that is expensive.

I voted for the wilson...But my real vote is true custom.

I would buy the 4. I think you would get more pleasure with them.

                            Yerman WROTE:

Well this depends on weather you ALREADY have a couple of firearms- or this is going to be your first buy.

I already have more than a few. I have also shot a lot of different arms. So I tend to look at what I want differently than the person next
                            to me.

Would I spend 3 grand on a firearm? 80% maybe. I wouldn't necessarily want to invest that much in a firearm, because basically you have a hard time getting the money back ( unless you got something nice ).

I would buy a 3 grand firearm for my own use. It would have to be something nice. So if you need a couple of gunns- don't spend the funds.

If you already have a nice couple of firearms, and you feel you need to have a certain kind- go for it. But remember. Do your research, talk to a few people, look it up, try to fire it, because you are getting into a specific field, once you spend that much.

                            Good Luck
