    My current project
    6.5 Grendel

    Satern barrel 24" fluted
    WCI brake
    JD upper
    Troy 15" rail
    Satern bolt
Haven't gotten the carrier yet or charging handle

    For 5.56
BHW 16" SS barrel carbine stole it for $150
    YHM mid length diamond rail
    RRA BCG
    RRA charging handle
    YHM gas block
    Paracomp

Spent about $480 for the 5.56 upper and it's sub MOA

As expected, such a variety in the responses. Liking the ADDAX and would love to support a local vendor but they can't keep anything in stock.

Here's the upper that really has my interest - Rainer Arms CE-16: http://www.rainierarms.com/?page=sho...roduct_id=1722

I hear what you mean about keeping stock. Some manufacturers are 6-9 months out before they ship. The wait sucks but its worth it once you get it. The Rainer upper is a nice choice and great price. You'll have some extra money for optics. Do they have a 1-8 twist available?

          Here's a pic of mine.

$760 total without optics or sling

Really?? I do??? Why thank you!

Seriously though, what kind of AR are you trying to build? 5.56? 7.62?

Do you want a lightweight CQB build? A precision bench rifle? Something in between?

There are top-tier manufacturers for all the types, and at $1k for an upper you are looking at pretty much top-tier. Probably only H&K is out of your price range.

Good questions, I was trying not to be too specific. Not 7.62/.308 this time around.

My current AR could be used for CQB stuff though the standard barrel profile can feel heavy when holding it up for too long.

Not a bench rifle. So I guess "something in between" perhaps 3 gun worthy.

If $1,000 somehow meant $1,300 or 1,400 then the Noveske might work. Sadly that's not the case.

For 3 gun I would go with an 18", rifle gas, stainless upper with a 1/8 twist and a Surefire brake. I want to build an upper like that one of these days, probably using a White Oak Arms barrel.

Check this out. Just heard about these the other day. Doesn't look like uppers only yet unfortunately.

I'd get Palmetto State ... and then spend the other $600 on ammo.

Exactly! 3 gun rifles sure are getting popular and the more quality manufacturers in it the better. That sure is a nice looking rifle.
