I will be going on a trip with my wife and was wondering if I can bring a few firearms with us and keep in our hotel room. Of course, I know of the appropriate precautions when transporting firearms but was wondering if a hotel room would carry the same characteristics as a home/apartment/campsite. Has anyone else travelled with their firearms when staying in a hotel?

Bringing firearms on trips/stay in a hotel

In CA...
A hotel room is a temporary residence and you can legally have a loaded firearm with you (stored or carried open or carried concealed) inside the room.
However, this applies in all of the USA, it may be aganist the hotel's policy and they may ask you to leave if they find you have a firearm. YMMV.sigpic

No issues; working at a hotel, I've seen people that CC (prints against clothing sometimes) and even have brought in rifle cases. No problems at having them as a guest; however, being an employee, the hotel owners have a no knife/firearms policy theyre very generous at enforcing... "Oh yeah, that Leatherman can't be brought with you to work, it's got a blade on it and is a knife."

I personally do not travel anywhere (via car) without my GLOCK, unloaded in a locked secure case. (I use a briefcase; not a gun case).
It would take probable cause and a search warrant to open my briefcase.
When traveling with weapons learn the language needed for a conversation with LEO. (if needed)
"I have nothing illegal"
"come back with a warrant"
"I do not consent to a search"
"Am I free to go?"
Do everything legal and you won't have any problems...

We have stayed in some sketchy hotels the past couple years to save a buck and make the trip more affordable. Even with a murderous K9, we felt so much safer with a bunch of little 10mm friends in the room. Protip: Sorry no ear plugs allowed when sleeping in unknown environments.
We overnighted in Ukiah a couple months ago at a nice motel across from the airport. TWEEKER CENTRAL.Comment

Like other said, just keep it on the DL and the less attention you get the better.
Sometimes you can't help it if you're carrying a 48" long hard case that it somewhat obvious that there's a long gun in there. I personally try to break down any long guns I have and fit them into smaller bags that don't stand out, like the 2 AR's I recently took with me to Vegas and carried through the hotel inside of a rolling carry-on suitcase. I've even been able to break down an 18" barreled shotgun and fit it inside of my Tumi carry-on (22x14x9 inch) bag. That and the AR's barely fit, but they do fit
.
That being said, I always have a firearm with me (when I can, and usually at handgun) at a hotel since you never know what weird or crazy stuff might happen.Comment

Yeah, when I moved from CA to TN I brought all my firearms in the hotel with me. Didn't want risk them being left in the truck alone. Seeing someone go in and out of a hotel room with rifle case after rifle case can make a person wonder lol. But I had no problems.Like other said, just keep it on the DL and the less attention you get the better.

Yeah, I have been making it a point recently to not travel without a firearm. GF's mom got pissed when she found out I had my 1911 locked in a gunvault nano in my overnight bag. I explained to her that, yes it was loaded (I loaded the mag and chambered around a few minutes after arriving) but it was locked and secured and the only way into that vault was a key that stays in my pocket. I refuse to go to their house unarmed anymore since her other daughter's ghetto-*** ex-boyfriend assaulted her and threatened to come back and kill everyone in the house and burn it down. When she goes down by herself I make sure that my GF takes her revolver with her and does the same thing using the locked case. Last few stays in the hotel I have done the same, GV nano goes into the nightstand with a loaded gun, and gets unlocked before I fall asleep, last thing I need is to be caught off guard by some tweeker or thief in the middle of my stay in an unfamiliar location.Any man who afflicts the human race with ideas must be prepared to see them misunderstood. - H.L Mencken
