    Interesting Trip into CA

I had an interesting trip into CA, recently, to visit family and friends. As background, I have been living in Portland, OR, full time for work, while my wife and kids are in So. Cal. Long story, but I have been an upstanding citizen and even vote here (of course all by mail in Oregon). Since I am an OR citizen, I have purchased a few nice "toys". I was passing through Sacramento on I-5 and was rear ended. While I went to the hospital to get checked, my car was checked out by the CHP, since the trunk would not close. That took 2.5 hours by the CHP to do this! I have the tow charges to prove it! They got really excited when they found a few of my bags of "toys", in the trunk, along with locked boxes with 'fun stuff' inside. When I got my car out of the tow yard the next morning, it was a mess from all of the 'searching'. I called the CHP desk sergeant, in Sacramento, that day and asked if anything had been taken or seived, since I would need to go and try and get it back before moving on. He checked the evidence locker and nothing was there from my car accident, but he told me that he had never seen such a thorough report by the CHP field officer. It was multiple pages, small print, and the officer had made a CD of all the photos he had taken to 'inventory' my car. Apparently, the officer was excited to see that I had some empty brass and misc. parts which made him do such a 'thorough job' of reviewing my car, but everything that should have been locked, and in the trunk, was, and all parts and pieces (especially the 'toys') were bagged, locked and put in their proper place. I thanked him for his time and I limped my damaged car and toys back to So. Cal. that day. I think I literally dodged a legal bullet with my trip preparation.

Before my trip, I had called Jason Davis, from Davis and Associates, to get good advice how to properly transport firearms, and configure them for CA. I followed his advice to the letter. I also poured over all of the good advice found here at Calguns.net where I do not post much but I read everything I can to be CA compliant when I visit. All of my AR toys, were properly configured, (buttoned and empty mags attached) and projectiles separated and locked.

The moral of the story, is that we should all be well informed of the rules for transport and a little preparation and prudence goes a long way. Jason and Calguns helped me do that. I am also appreciative that the CHP acted professionally, during they search and review to 'inventory' my stuff.

Glad it turned it good. You did save yourself some hassle. I'm sure it feels good when you get into Oregon =). Lovely state by the way.

Before my trip, I had called Jason Davis,
hehe. I would be interested to know what Jason told you. Locked container, etc.?

He was helpful, but focused mainly on getting my configurations 'right' so I was 'legal'. He was also responsive when I called him from the hospital (first call to Wifey, then Jason, for the record) to let him know I might need his help to get my stuff 'out of hawk'. Calguns also has those great firearms transportation guides listed from the NRA and with the CA quirks. I am just glad the CHP did their job as they should.

My take is this did not happen unless Davis esq. posts.

What is a "toy"? What did Jason charge? Post his number please. Phone number that is, the one that is good 24/7.

Not sure what you mean by the first sentence, but his number is on his web site, and just for clarity, it was not instantaneous, but he did get back to me quickly.
That trip, I had my .223 AR pistol, Savage 111 Hog Hunter (.338WM) and I think, one of my 7.62x39 AR toys.

As to the costs, I plead the fifth. Attorney client privilege, or something like that.

Thank you for replying. . I hope you didn't pay more than 5 minutes of searching the wiki would have cost here. ..........zero.

Since you have not addressed it, I assume toy means a gun that might be a AW in Oregon but not here..........how did that work?

Since there are no real AW rules in OR, all guns are just guns. Large Mags, real mag eject buttons that work freely, etc. are all fine in OR. Just walk into the store, pick out what you want. Pay $10 for the sheriff check and pay for the 'toy' and leave in 15 - 20 minutes to go have fun on the Federal land near Mt. Hood.

Well, first, they did not cut the locks, and if they had, as I said, they were configured correctly.

I am assuming the reference is the Federal transport rules, but I do not know the reference. I don't know if that is why they did not go further. Just glad they didn't.

Sorry about your car. What a hassle.
Glad to hear that all the gun drama was avoided through proper knowledge and preparation.

It pays to ride legal. You never know what will happen. Great job on your part.
