Went in today since I was in the neighborhood, decent sized shop, some nice stuff. Saw a Colt AR and a 50BMG(?) upper behind the counter so I asked if they carried any AR parts. The fella informed me that selling AR PARTS is illegal in CA.
Damn, theres lots of folks going to jail.
Oh well, wont be buying stuff there I guess.

I drove past them once. Heard they were not OLL friendly - so kept driving. I think I even stepped on the accelerator and sped up a bit just as I passed - didn't even want to be breathing the same air that some OLL unfriendly may have been breathing.

I bought some pepper spray for my wife from them and a surefire light. Since they are the only gun store around now, that is the closest place to buy a surefire. The gunstore in Temecula went belly up late last year.

You are correct tho about them not being OLL friendly or even knowledgeable.

I've had mixed experiences with them.

First time: Maybe two, three years ago. Took my mom in to look at a shotgun for the house (I was living at home at the time). Extremely polite and helpful. Even offered my mom a cup of coffee.

Second time: About a year ago. I went in asking about the availability of a Bersa Thunder .380. Was told that it was a "Saturday Night Special" and then quoted $95 dollars to transfer one bought online. I walked out feeling like I had committed a crime.

Third and Final time: About 5 months ago. Wanted to get a buttcuff for my Mossberg. I took my roommate who wanted to look at a Baby Eagle. We waked in and I was waved in the general direction of the items. I bought my cuff, and a bore mop, and my roommate bought some shoot-n-see targets. As I walked out, I asked him what was wrong (something obviously was), and he said that he felt like, "A black man at a Klan rally in there."

Both times I had bad experiences, I was dressed in a polo and khaki shorts, so it's not like I was ringing any bells. I've heard similar stories from others, and I doubt I'll ever set foot in there again. I'm not to keen on being treated poorly. I gave them two shots after they were decent to my mom, but that's it.

Nope. I didn't mean to infer it had anything to do with race, I just quoted my roommate, since I think he summed up the feeling quite well. I can't speak for him, but the feeling I got was that we were treated like we didn't belong there. (It takes a lot for something to visibly bother him.)

There was another guy (maybe late 20s, early 30s, full sleeve tattoos.) in there that was buying a handgun who didn't seem like he'd ever purchased a firearm before (he was asking what counted as proof of residency, which means I doubt he was a regular or a buddy or anything that would get him special treatment) and there were several of the employees "tending" to him, and when I asked about the shotgun stuff, it was like I was bothering the employee, and I got a general wave towards the part of the store with the buttcuff.

I mean, I've worked retail, and it's not like there was a mad rush, or even 1:1 employee-to-customer ratio. There was three or four of them, and the guy 4473'ing, and us. Really, to be very honest, I cant quantify what it was. It was a gut feeling, and it happened more than once, and to other people whose instincts i have no reason to doubt, so that was it for me.

they are the only stocking dealer in the area now but there are 2 transfer dealers that can also special order firearms in the area. I am one of them and the other is off Ivy at US Safe. The owner of gunclips.net has his FFL but I don't know if he is still doing transfers. I have had mediocure to horrible service from them. the biggest offenders there are the owners son and daughter. I have been told that the owner is a real nice guy, just haven't met him.

If you see an earlier post of mine. They did a bait and switch on me. Gave me a price for a Stoeger. Buddy and I started DROS paperwork. Said he would call on Monday to get our credit card info and authorization. Never did call. We called him back and he said your total will be .......

Anyways the total sounded kind of high. I asked him if we were getting it at the price he quoted us. He then proceeded to tell me he misquoted us. Nice of him to hide it from me until I asked him about it. My friend bent over and bought it. I was pissed and said no. Ended up buying one on gunbroker cheaper than the Shootist had originally quoted us.

BTW. They had an AR in there labeled "For Law Enforcement Only" and it was olympic arms! I wouldn't trust Olympic Arms if I were LE.

I guess everyone's experiences are different....I've had nothing but good luck with the Shootist. Randy (owner) has always gone out of his way to make me feel welcome in his shop. I've visited there maybe 20 times or so over the years. Normally they have some interesting S&W's there which are hard to find elsewhere.

I would like to meet Randy one of these days. So far I have only been able to work with his son and his daughter. A friend of mine has been friends with Randy for years and says he is a real good guy who loves his old guns. They will not even discuss OLL anything. One of the salesmen that is there now used to work at Accurate Arms in Temecula was telling me that Randy refuses to even look into the legality of OLL. His loss, I send people there to look at the guns when they come to me and don't know what they want. One last thing I know that they will only honor their online prices if you buy from their website. I wish they carried more reloading stuff but they told me that no one asks for it. I've been in the store a few times, the first time I went there I felt like I wasn't welcome but after a couple more trips the salesmen treated me fine. I guess they have to see your face a couple of times before they warm up to you.

I just picked up a P-14 from The Shootist. I dealt only with Patrick BUT stood around Bsing with the others. I felt nothing but good vibes from all of them.

Not to get too far off on a tangent but everyone has their likes and dislikes. It's not up to me to dictate to someone else how to run their business and what to stock. Now, admittedly,the members of this website are predominately interested in the black rifles and defense type handguns. You don't see me insisting that unless you all carry Colt SAA's and Winchester 94's that you're not worth the time of day.

We don't have that many FFL's around this state anymore and it's not going to get any better. We can't afford to burn any of them (except the crooked ones). If the shootist doesn't want to deal in black rifles so be it. You couldn't find anyone more helpful for your cowboy shooting needs, S&W's-in stock, or general hunting needs. Learn to "read" the situation and don't go in looking for a squabble where there isn't any. You probably will not find any gunshops that carry everything for every type of shooter here in this POS state. The cost would be prohibitive.
