S&W .38spl + P 2" stainless; plenty of power, lightweight and very concealable.

^^^ in my opinion if your going to buy a .38 spl you might as well up it to a .357 mag for the versatility and knock down power. (if there is such a thing)

A single action revolver would be a good choice. It is a very safe gun. Many calibers are available; mine is .45. Many brands are available; mine is a Ruger Vaquero.

The plow handles on these revolvers are designed so the barrel points where your hand points.

These are very good hand guns to learn all the basics on.

          Best of luck always.

            1. Revolver (as many here have suggested)
            2. .22lr for first gun
            3. Check out Turner's. Many Rugers on sale this week

                About the Ruger SP 101

The Ruger SP-101 has been around a long time and is very popular. Just remember that chambered for a .357 round, that bullet does have a "kick" to it.The fact that you can use either .38 or .357 is a definite advantage. Revolvers are also really easy to clean and maintain. After some time goes by after your purchase (if this is the gun you choose), you can get all kinds of trigger kits / grips to customize it to your style of shooting. The most important thing to know is to find a gun that fits your hands, and is comfortable to hold. Don't buy a gun just because you think that you look cool holding it. If you're not comfortable holding the gun, you won't shoot it well.

What exactly is single action and double action on a revolver and what is the difference?

With a DA, each pull of the trigger will cock the hammer, align the cylinder with the barrel, and release the hammer, resulting in an overall long trigger pull. With SA, you can manually cock the hammer with your thumb which will also align the cylinder with the barrel. The trigger pull will be much lighter since it only has to release the cocked hammer. I'd recommend a DA/SA like the S&W 686 or Ruger GP 100. That way you can get practice with each. Just my $.02.

So with a DA/SA revolver you can do either or? And the s&w 686 has both of those? And what about the ruger sp101? Thank you all so much for the help!

Ruger and S&W should be your first choices.

Yes... DA/SA can do either. I'm not too familiar with the sp101, but I'm pretty sure it is only DA.
