Going to College in California, need some help

Hello all, I'm 18 right now and live in Arizona, but will be moving to Oakland next year to attend UC Berkeley. As of right now I own a couple of guns, an HK MR556a1, HK USP45 (LEM), and a Glock 17. I know I won't be able to take them with me my first year, but I plan on getting an apartment my second year.

My questions are:

How old do you have to be to own a handgun in California? In Arizona the minimum legal age is 18.

Can I buy handguns and rifles in private sales in California?

What are the rules concerning carrying knives at Berkeley?

I'm probably going to buy a set of guns that are just for California (no point in buying 10 round mags or wrecking my AR just for 3 years of use), what are the legalities concerning bringing handguns/rifles/shotguns into California?

What are some good gun shops and ranges in Oakland and the surrounding area that can be reached by bicycle or public transportation from the UC Berkeley campus?

What is crime like in Oakland?

Will I be able to get a chl at 21?

What are gun laws concerning FFL's like in California, are there waiting periods, etc...?

Any and all extra info about California weapon laws in general would be appreciated. Thanks.

to buy a hand gun in CA you have to be 21..but you can possess one I believe..(although you will have problems buying ammo for it)

try not to cry to much when others chime in on how vastly different gun laws are in CA Vs Az

if i were you I would just buy 10rnd mags for what u want to use use and put a Bullet button on the ar..you can always take it off when you leave the state again.

It's a large city in CA. The criminals have easier access to guns than do law abiding citizens. It's a working class town. Good and bad intentioned people live there.
The laws are pretty much in the wiki as for CA specific. I'm now curious as to transporting firearms on public transportation as well.

I thought ar's have to have their flash hiders pinned and welded and their stocks fixed before they were CA legal. If I put a unloaded gun in a case and take it on public transportation to the range is it legal?

Is the waiting period just for handguns? The age to buy is 21, but in AZ that is only if your buying from an FFL, is it the same in California?

I heard that CA cities often have gun buyback operations. Can you just camp outside the doors and offer people more money than the gun buybackers for their firearms?

I'd recommend not mentioning to anyone who you live with or go to school with that you own guns. I'd suggest just googling california gun laws for all your questions, use the flowchart at the top of the page for reference on ar's and other "assault weapons"

I would like you to ask about a lot of things but being a freshman at one of the most demanding colleges in the country guns should be way down on the list. Do the right thing and worry about things like GPA, Deans list, graduate programs available in your field.

UC has a campus like all colleges and there is a lot going on in the streets. You can get involved in those goofy protestesters and miss the opportunity you have been given or you can put your nose to the grind stone and spend four years preparing for your future.

I am not your sponsor so do as you please but ten years from now and you want to take a masters program and they won't let you in because of your GPA while earning your BS don't cry to any one but the mirror.

To answer the first paragraph:

No, that is an issue that the states on the east coast have to worry about, here in CA on the other hand, you can run featureless or magazine locked which is a whole new reading for you.

As for the unloaded firearm transportation, not the smartest idea but do-able I think. Just need to know the 1000 ft gun free school zones and thugs that can kick your butt in Oakland on the bus! To keep it simple and cover all areas of transportation, keep ALL cases locked, either long guns or handgun. I don't think there is anything that concerns public transportation, so you are good to go.

To answer the second paragraph:

All handgun and long gun sales are to go through a FFL(no cash and carry here unless C&R), either new or private party. All handgun sales either new or private party may only be sold to those 21 and up in CA. The waiting period applies to all firearms either new or private party.

No you cannot camp out and offer money to people in that manner as cash and carry doesn't apply in CA. So unless you hire an FFL to sit there with you excluding handgun sales as you aren't 21, you are out of luck.

So it says I need a HSC to purchase handguns in CA, is this only for purchasing from FFL's? To get a HSC I need CA drivers license, so out of staters can't get a HSC.

I can't legally transport an assault weapon in a case on public transportation because it must be put in a vehicle.

"It is illegal to import, sell, give, trade, or lend a magazine that holds more than 10 rounds of ammunition, except for fixed tubular magazines for lever-action rifles and .22 caliber rifles; however, the possession of such magazines is legal." So I can have 30 rd magazines I just can't sell/give/or trade them.
