Eye dominance

Recently I helped introduce a friend to firearms. I was talking to them about eye dominance and how to determine it and such. For me, I am left eye dominant, but right handed. From the beginning, when I first was trained on a firearm in CMP Air Rifle, I have been shooting right handed (I think I screwed up the eye dominance test when I was younger =p). Although, whenever I shot air rifle, I would have to wear appropriate safety glasses, and they had a sight blocker (duct tape) in front of my left eye. My question is, today, would this be a limitation to my ability to shoot accurately? Should I learn to shoot left handed?

The human body is an amazing thing and can learn to do almost anything.


I am left handed but right eye dominant so I shoot right handed. But I have seen people just hold the gun in front of the opposite eye. Some people will shoot pistol with their dominant eye and rifle in their dominant hand. For me eye dominance is more important than hand dominance.

shoot with both eyes open and eye dominance doesn't matter.

I'm right handed, and left eye dominant. Once I was taught to shoot with both eyes open, not only did my accuracy improve, so did my target acquisition time, and follow up shots.

Put a piece of scotch tape over your left eye glasses, you can still see, but the right eye is now focused on the front sight.

I also use the scotch tape trick. (I'm right handed, left eye dominant.) However, I just place tape over the upper third of the left eye piece. This way I have full view below the tape when not sighting.

I crossed over, I don't even know how to shoot right handed anymore.

When we have scouts shoot clays we have them shoot from their dominant eye side to start. We can overcome the odd feeling of shooting with the weak hand a lot easier than getting them used to using their non-dominant eye.

Then we let them experiment and decide what side works best for them. Most stay with the dominant eye side, some work hard to move to strong hand side. Just depends on the kid.

Hm, if I shoot with both eyes open, but on my non-dominant side, would that affect my point of aim at all? It shouldn't with a reflex sight like an Aimpoint, but what about say, with irons? Just as long as I see the irons lined up, I should be okay right?

If you're right handed, stick with left eye/right hand for pistol.

Shoot long guns left handed, so you use your dominant eye when shooting irons.

My wife is left eye dominant and shoots long guns right handed with a red dot sight.

I'm right eye dominant and right handed.

I still shoot with both eyes open...gives me a better peripheral sight picture.

I switch hit. Long guns left handed with left eye and handguns right handed. For the longest time I shot them with my left eye. I have now switched and shoot right eye for handguns.
