SKS guys I need your help!! Scope mounting question.

My friend has decided to scope his SKS! I told him I would ask around, and see what info I could get. Are the UTG mounts any good? If not what do you recommend?
Do any of those mounts hold zero?

Don't know about the UTG mount, but I'd avoid the lame receiver cover with a scope mount. They are junk IMO. Generally to be effective a scope mount should rigidly mount to the receiver. I don't like any scope mounts that block the iron sights.

I think an SKS would be an ideal candidate for a red dot. Nice and small.

I used the rear replacement dust cover type mount. Good for a red dot (which is what I used it for), anything that doesn't have to hold a perfect zero for pinpoint accuracy (can't get pinpoint accuracy out of an SKS anyways). I could hit a paper plate at a 100 yards, 10 our of 10 times. Was good enough for me. Just my .02

If he has to have a scope, then your best choice is a Choate mount. But it does require drilling and tapping.

                  +1 on the Choate mount.

AFAIK the receiver cover mount is the easiest option but is not the most secure.

I read the reviews and some said solid mount but others said poor casting.

The great thing about the SKS are the looser tolerances which help to make it a very reliable platform. Unfortunately that also means than some of the parts will be nice and tight but some will be not so tight. So aftermaket covers will be hit or miss as far as the fit. It also depends what country manufactured the rifle b/c specifications can slightly differ as well.
