SKS as a home defense weapon.

So, tonight I heard a bunch of noise coming from my back yard. I have had someone walking around there once before trying to steal a lawn mower but they took off they second they were even noticed. But this time I quickly grabbed my SKS slapped in the stripper clip and put up they bayo. The SKS was ready to go in seconds. It was pretty good for clearing corners and inspecting the backyard out. Not the best but bad. The ruckus turned out to be a couple of loose dogs that had wondered into the backyard, if they had been violent the bayo would have been quite useful.

I'm probably going to get a shot barreled shotgun with a light sometime, but until then SKS seemed to do just fine.

    Welcome to the forum!
No offense, but that does not seem like a very smart decision. You put yourself at great risk.

I have pretty good lighting and a pool room before you enter the backyard so I was able to scout out the area before. If it was a dark confined area of course I wouldn't have done that. I went out the to make sure no one was hiding in bushes or in the pump house. Someone had forgotten to close the side gate and I found the dogs wondering around in the front.

Thankfully, there was not much at risk putting

Heh. Not bad. I'd avoid putting the bayonet out, though.

Rifles make great HD tools. The SKS is a tad long (even worse with that bayonet extended ), but it'll do.

A bayonet sounds like a great idea for home defense. I should add one to my pistol.

I always check out noises I hear at night in my backyard. What would you recommend, call the police and wonder how many times you can call before they don't respond anymore or just let someone run off with your stuff?
sigpicIf you loan someone twenty dollars and never see them again, it was probably worth it.

What is the risk Hopi is talking about? What am I missing? If there were burglars, I'd probably bet on the guy with the SKS...

His second post cleared up some details for me.

I also feel that someone shouldn't be shot for stealing a lawnmower. In my opinion, and that's all it is, I would be happy to let cops check out the back yard area as to avoid a firefight of some sort. Now, if somebody broke into my house, that person would certainly find himself on the wrong end of my gun.

This is true, but while I'm waiting for the cops, I'd be watching the guy over my rifle.

                    Yep.

I like the idea of having a short bayonet on a HD weapon. You come around a corner and the BG tries to grab at the barrel = ouch!

You can add a bayonet to a Glock if if recall correctly.....

First thing that came to my mind when someone mentioned 'bayonet' and 'handgun'. Of course, that might be because I have two CZ's.

Not if you have the para SKS. Very short and light. Can have a bayo too.
