          I recall a History Channel spot about the German version. According to that spot, it was designed for an armored vehicle which had been designed without machine guns to keep off enemy infantry. Supposedly, the curved barrel could be stuck out of a firing port and the vehicle hosed off, so to speak. IIRC, the rounds would usually break up and exit as shrapnel in the German weapons.
