Yeppers....you can never be too careful. Even if i'm dry firing my gun and then put it down to go use the restroom or something, I always press check again once I pick it back up.

          Rule #1.

Screwdriver to pull the bolt back? I agree, sounds like you need a 10/22.

a JC Higgins from Sears (likely made by Remington for Sears)

They can be had now for about $100.

Believe it or not, I found two places I can get the charging handle from. But they are as old school as the gun. I have to call in to order it.

"needs a screw driver to pull the bolt back" and you didn't check the chamber to make sure it wa unloaded to begin with? Lotta fail going on here imo.

Oh, and when we cleared it and thought it was unloaded, guess what, a second round was still in there and got chambered.

                /QUOTE]

You mean you chambered the 2nd round from the magazine into the breach. The only way that can happen is to cycle the bolt. You do know how this gun works?

Guns are more useful when they're loaded.
Never initiate force against another. That should be the underlying principle of your life. But should someone do violence to you, retaliate without hesitation, without reservation, without quarter, until you are sure that he will never wish to harm - or never be capable of harming - you or yours again.

Reminds me of that one day I went to City of 'BLANK' evidence room to pick-up a few LE confiscated firearms.

As we begin; I clear the action on the first firearm and she says "oh... none of these are loaded... as she nods her head they've all been checked." I say: "oh... okay. I'll clear them anyway... it's just what I do" as I shrug my shoulders, and she shrugs her shoulders... and we continue...

While checking off the item & serial number list, I pick up a .7MM MAG huntin' rifle... yanked the bolt back and a live 7MAG goes flippin' through the air and hits the concrete floor with a resounding 'CLINK-ity-CLANK'...

HHhahaaaa... mannnnn... I can still, in my mind, see in slow motion every rotation, every reflection, the entire path of travel that big'ole FAT round and as it hit the floor... and that sound it made on contact with cement... I was like

The evidense room Officer (she) turned ashen white, looked at me and as a tear rolled from her eye she says... "please DO NOT say anything to my superior... I will loose my job!"

I said: "Not a word... thats why we check 'ALL' firearms... we NEVER assume!"

She just looked down and nodded her head, wiped the tear and composed herself.

It's a good idea to clear your pockets sometimes, too.

I got called for jury duty several years ago. The day of my appearance, it was cold and rainy, so I wore a heavy coat that I probably hadn't worn in a year or more. As I went through the line to the metal detector, I reached the table where they have trays to empty your pockets into. I dutifully dumped my keys, wallet and change into one of the trays.

Checking the coat pockets, I instantly remembered the last time I had worn it. That day shooting clays down at the creek. I had two 12ga shells in the pocket.

I froze and looked at the nearest deputy manning the table. As quietly as I could, I said, "I just found a couple of shotgun shells in my coat pocket". He said "What!!??" I told him, "I haven't worn this coat in quite a while, and just realized there are two 12ga shells in the pocket." He gave me a long, hard stare and then reached under the table and lifted up a wastebasket. He quietly said, "Just drop them in here and don't say a word." Clunk, clunk.

Whew. It could have gone badly, but thankfully did not.

Found a Marlin 60 .22 LR at my Dad's house a few years back. I was going to dry fire it and sure enough, glad I checked, it was fully loaded.
