    Transporting multiple firearms via airlines?

I'm planning a trip in a year or so out to Georgia (not that it really matters where I'm going, I suppose). I want to bring my AR, Mosin Nagant M39, and three pistols.

I read over the TSA guidelines, so I understand the rules behind how to transport (hard case, locked, ammo stored separately, declare it when you're supposed to, etc.)...

My question is... how does this work with transporting guns, especially multiple guns? Am I going to have to pay extra to check them? Do I need to just put them all in one case, or can I use two single-rifle cases (and distribute the pistols in them)?

    You pay per bag, right?
Each airline has a limit on how many you can bring. I think Virgin America is 2 guns.

Below is a link to the TSA page on transporting weapons. However, each airline can apply additional guidelines. In general no more than 5 weapons to a case.

I fly with multiple firearms all the time, just make sure you get to the baggage claim early so they are not going around and around without your being there.

            Doesn't shipping require an FFL?

The ammo can be in the same locked case as the weapon. Read the guidelines for the specific airline that you plan to use. There are weight limits for ammo.

if you are flying with firearms, this video is your best friend, you will learn everything you would need to know, as well as tips and tricks:

                shipping firearms:

It is 100% legal to ship firearms to yourself for legal purposes in another state without the use of an FFL.

the best way to do this is to ship it to yourself, care of, ________. now it
is 100% illegal for that person to open the box, because that is considered a "transfer" but they can sign for the box and hold it for you so long as they DO NOT OPEN IT!!!!!

disclosure: im not a lawyer BLAH BLAH BLAH, you should consult the ATF FAQ page if you plan on shipping them, or contact the ATF directly and ask them just to make sure.

Last time my son was here from Virginia I sent him home with eleven guns in a double wide scoped rifle hard case. Some rifles we broke down ( AR, Marlin 22lr ) and a shotgun had its barrel removed. The pistols were broke down and the revolvers were fit in the empty spaces. It was quite a puzzle but fun doing it. My son was dressed in his Navy attire and all the gal did was put the fed tag in it. They don't charge for baggage anyways.

The trick these days is to get a carrier to allow the shipment to go without an FFL at one end. As SouthCoastTargets notes, BATFE says its legal to do that without an FFL, but the carriers have their own way of doing business.
