Didn't know where else to post this, so I'll try here. I am currently in CO and am moving to CA next year. I have a registered SBR, a Colt pattern 9mm, that will need to be unregistered before I can do anything with it. After this is done, is there a way I can bring it into CA?

Help with bringing in a firearm to CA

Maybe. You can't bring a SBR into California, period. If you get it unregistered federally, you possable could convert it to a pistol. Federally I don't think you can convert Rifles to Pistols so I would either get a 16"+ barrel to make it a legal rifle, or buy a new lower that is registered as a pistol (if you need to in your state.)
Check and make sure it is not on the "banned by name" list here: https://oag.ca.gov/sites/all/files/a.../aws-guide.pdf Several Colts are, not sure how the 9mm ones are marked. If it is not on the list, your next issue is its configuration. You can only import it if it is "featureless" (No flash hider, no baynet lug, no no pistol grip, etc) or it has a fixed magazine ie the magazine cannot be removed unless the upper is swung open. No magazines that hold over 10 rounds can be brought to California. All firearms you bring to California have to be registered.
I'm sure I'm missing something -
The roll mark on the lower receiver means everything. I think there’s like three different ones. Some say Sporter which I believe is banned by name, some say AR 15 which I know is banned by name, and other ones just say Colt SMG. That last one I think is the one that you might have a chance with.Comment

Only the full auto ones said the SMG. The semi auto ones in the 1990s said "Colt AR-15 Carbine 9mm" Those would fall under the named banned list. Perhaps the newer ones dropped the "ar-15" that would be the only way it might be legal in CA.The roll mark on the lower receiver means everything. I think there’s like three different ones. I'll have to look at the list, but the roll marks are:
SMG
MODEL 635
CAL 9MM NATO
It's an H&R lower, so Colt is nowhere in the gun.Last edited by csuengr; 12-10-2025, 5:42 AM.Comment

I was planing on getting a new lower. The one I have now screams NFA due to required markings.Maybe. You can't bring a SBR into California, period. So you don't have a Colt, so its not on the banned by name list. Then you just need to make it a legal configuration as mentioned before to bring to CA.Comment

All firearms brought into california have be be declared and registered. He can bring in off roster handguns. They key is he need to make it a legal configuration before he brings it because the DOJ is going to ask for pictures when he tries to register it.👍 1Comment

I might have to get a SBA3 brace then. The PSA braces look an awful lot like a stock.
And thanks for the information all, it's making issues easier for me to check off the list.
Now for my VR80...?Comment

The lower being an NFA registered SBR is not an issue in CA.
i have SBR’s registered in other states that live in CA configured as pistols.
You won’t be able to change your SBR registration to a CA address but you can keep it registered in any state that allows SBR’s.
Its the actual configuration of the gun that matters in CA.
if you put a 16” barrel on it and go either fixed mag or featureless, the gun will be a CA compliant rifle.
You could also make it a CA compliant pistol by removing the stock and fixing the magazine.
When you take away the federal features that made your Federal SBR need to be registered, the resulting gun no longer falls into the requirement to notify when you transport it out of the state it’s SBR registered in and thats how you can bring it to CA.
