So i'm finally getting a safe!

And it's been long needed. I'm getting the Canon Safari safe item # 5521DLX. 399.99 from Costco after 200$ off. I've been shopping for a while and my birthday is coming up on Memorial day and coincidentally the safe went on sale last week. This one plops right into my price range.

Shop Costco.com for electronics, computers, furniture, outdoor living, appliances, jewelry and more. Enjoy low warehouse prices on name-brand products delivered to your door.

Anyone have any experience with this particular model? By the reviews this safe is realitively light coming in at 240 lbs. Which isn't a bad thing because i live in a second floor apartment. But this brings me to my problem. With a safe being "light" (Not light for me). There is still a nagging thought that someone could "walk away" with said safe. It has 4 spots to bolt it to the ground but i don't know if i'd even be able to do so because i'm renting the apartment and i'm in an upstairs unit.

    thoughts?

However, he lives for that day when he will be able to use his warrior skills and mindset to keep the wolf from harming the sheep."

    Congrats on getting a safe!

Check with your apt. manager about bolting down the safe.

Will do, but i'm kind of hesitant about it because i want the ownership to be as discreet as possible.

Is the worry of someone "walking away" with the safe a relevant concern?

Edit: If this is in the wrong thread please move it accordingly.

Yes, stealing a safe is not as difficult as a task as you might think. Its just like putting all your valuables in one "to-go-box". Bolting down is a must.

Someone can walk with a 500lb safe. Bolting to the floor can be problematic. Less problematic to find your stud and lag bolt into your studs. Of course, that means drilling the safe and putting holes in the way. Easier and cheaper to repair than carpet and flooring.

The #1 thing I think you can do is keep it secret. That means, make sure when you are transporting it up the stairs, cover it or put it in a fridge box or something and do it at night. Second, put it in a closet where it is not easily seen. One person sees it and they are chatting with someone else who is chatting with someone else, etc and soon someone knows you have a 240lb safe in your living room with some guns in it.

The worry of someone walking is relevant, but you can only do so much. Bolt it to the wall, get insurance and enjoy.

you need to find out what the floor is made of, wood= good concrete= bad

if it is wood, you could use some lag bolts since you are not going to go through the ceiling below.

you are just trying to slow them down anyway.

and when you move, the holes will disappear in the carpet

letting the apt manager know you even have guns may not be a good thing also

            most of them are dicks

lag bolt it into the wall studs, some mud and paint isn't very expensive when you move out.

That's honestly what i plan on doing. The major problem is i live on a relatively busy street. I'm not sure the packaging it may or may not come in, but covering it would be a good call.

At this point i am planning on bolting it to the ground. I believe the floor is wood. The apartment is maybe 30 yrs old. I'm pretty sure it's not concrete.

Thanks for all the replies guys.

Another thing. This particular safe doesn't say anything about a mechanical entry. Soooo, what are contingencies if the batteries die? Will the safe have an indicator of when the batteries are dying?

Edit: After a little research the battery compartment is on the exterior of the safe. Which helps if the battery dies. not if the electronics do.

                    Dead battery

Non issue for dead or dying battery. The combination is programmed into the lock and is not dependent on battery power for retention. A dying battery will emit audible beeps when it's about to give out. You can either change it then or when it actually dies (been there, done both) New battery will allow you to enter your current combination.

How long the combo is retained after a dead battery is unknown to me. But, with a safe arriving from the factory with a dead battery and being able to insert a fresh one in to enter the combo says it's probably a long time.

Congrats on the new purchase! Try to put it in a corner and definitely bolt it down. 2 bolts in the floor and 2 in the wall will help eliminate the leverage needed to pry it up and tip it. Enjoy the peace of mind knowing you've added an extra level of protection!

Yes cover it when you bring it in, you dont want some one noticing you just bought a gun safe, then breaking into your house a few days later.
