the way crap keeps changing i have no idea what to tell him.

Anyone have any knowledge and input?

Rimfire rifles are not subject to the assault weapon restrictions of pistol grips or collapsible stocks and such. The only legality he would have to consider would be bringing magazines with greater than 10 round capacity.

If it's an M&P 15 with a CMMG conversion bolt, then I'd go with "no."
I do not believe that a conversion bolt by itself negates assault weapon feature status, certainly something I'd not want to test from a legal standpoint.

      If it's an actual M&P 15/22, he's fine.

Just have him separate the upper from the lower.

That appears to be a dedicated .22. No concerns as long as the mags are 10 round.

At the range, no problem. To and from the range, taken apart. That doesn’t just apply to rimfires, either!😂😏

A-OK here. My AR22 has a pistol grip and adjustable stock. It used a 5.56 lower. I removed the buffer and spring just to make no doubt it's .22LR only.

Just make sure you stay in the boundaries of the minimum overall length requirement measured when folded to the shortest length possible. I believe it is 30" for centerfire semi-autos and 26" for everything else but you should double check that.
