I recently acquired a new Krieger bull barrel in .223 for a good price. It has a 8 twist. My question for the group is what cartridges are suitable for this twist rate in the caliber? Thank you in advance for your inputs.

So it’s a 223 Wylde?
If so it’s between a 223 / 5.56 and should be suitable for basically 55 to 77gr, and that 1/8 has a slightly tighter chamber so possibly more accuracy.
I just deal with 1/7 twist.Last edited by acaligunner; 10-08-2025, 5:52 PM.Vida Loca Homes

I have 2 barrels in 1:8, an 18" 5.56 Faxon and a 20" .223 "varmint chamber" White Oak Armament.
The Faxon likes anything 69 gr and below. The White Oak like things 50 gr and below and > 69 gr.
Probably more a function of the chamber in my case I guess.👎 1Comment

Pairing Barrel Twist Rates with Bullet Weights for .223 and 5.56 NATO
AR-15 Barrel Twist Rate Explained...For a 16-inch general-use carbine, the 1-in-8 twist is about as versatile as it gets. This twist rate will comfortably stabilize bullets up to 80-grains, and the excellent 75- and 77-grain bullets also work great at a wider spectrum of velocities — which means barrel length isn't critical. My 3-gun rifle, built by my friend Iain Harrison, wears an 18-inch, 1-in-8 twist White Oak Armament barrel and shoots just about anything well...
How To Pick the Right Round For Your AR-15 Barrel...Compared to other AR-15 twist rates, 1:8 is the most versatile. Barrels with this twist rate can work well with most ammo, offering sufficient stability to 70 to 90-grain bullets and preventing overspin in light rounds. While 1:8 twist rate barrels can fire most slugs with adequate accuracy, the best results occur when firing 60 to 80-grain bullets...
According to the chart in that piece, the 'sweet' range is 62 - 77 grain....The 1:8 twist barrel is the most versatile of the bunch, the perfect option for16-inch carbine AR-15 (the most common configuration on the market.) Keith Wood of Guns and Ammo said this barrel can “comfortably stabilize” up to an 80-grain projectile while still providing enough flexibility for shooters to use lighter ammo for matches like 3-Gun...
This is a black and white version of the same chart from the 2nd, linked article...
