You have the butt-stock removed off of a fixed stock AK-47? I don't really know much about weird legal things, and I just got to thinking that it COULD be fired with the stock detached, and it would no longer be long enough right? Correct me if I'm wrong. When I say removed, I mean, say you are taking the stocks to be refinished and have no other stocks at hand. For the period of the gun being refinished it is not attached the gun in any way. Just my random thoughts... Thanks

Your rifle must be 31 inches OAL in California, Fed law is a litte more lenient.

You could extend the barrel, but you still need 31'' stem to stern.

Yes exactly, so say the butt-stock is removed for refinishing for a few days. The rifle is illegal at that point technically right being that it COULD still be fired.

Sorry, I didnt read all the way through your post. You mean like taking it off for finishing and stuff? I dont know. I have pulled AKs apart many times for whatever reason and will continue to do so. I never thought about it. I suppose that might be illegal.... but what isnt?

Maybe seperate the bolt and piston out of it so it cant be fired. I dont know how intent factors in.

If you have it apart, most likely it is completely apart like the other poster said-gas tube, bolt etc all out.
I dont think it would fly if you take your stockless AK to the range, and when questioned about it say "The stock is off getting refinished". It all comes down to intent
