So what the hell happened to CalGuns?

So its been bothering me for a while now, and I dont go on the site like I used to, but I was wondering if it was just me or do others feel the same, but the changes to the forum have been nothing but atrocious!

What happened to our iTrader ratings? Is it harder to find things? The site feels like it functioned much better before the change?

Have you tried other California 2A forums? If so, do they function a lot better than CG?

I know the guys who run this forum are all probably trying to better this site, but it has been some time now.

sorry, just had to get it out of my chest. Didnt mean to offend anyone.

    Your thoughts? Anyone?

Common theory is that The Janitor let things slide too far, refused help, delays became the norm as did huge problems getting on for too many, and people bailed realizing that years of posts, trades, and donations went down the internet toilet. In the meantime another gun-centric forum CA Guns opened up to fill the void. Many former members to this site (myself included) started going there, and essentially for many never looked back. With that, several members who claim to NOT go there continue to champion this site, while denouncing the other, newer site. Things got heated a bit, and the comments ensued. I come back here because I think all that is funny and entertaining to see some get a case of chapped anus over some internet ramblings. It’s fun to get them stirred, just to see their reaction. Join in! It’s free, and not like joining with some suckers who actually gave money to this diminished relic.

Exit next day: see, it worked. Three β€œthumbs down” hahahahaha 🀣 Trolled those, I can guess which ones grandmothers!

quick synopsis: forum was running on very old software that also required other very old software. The servers that hosted the site were phased out, so a migration was necessary. It was first migrated to one service, but it wasn’t viable for a variety of reasons. It was then migrated again, but ran into some technical difficulties and work is ongoing. ITrader was not updated from the old version of the software, so it could not be reinstalled.

As to other forums, it’s questionable if there is enough of a forum interested population to support multiple sites dedicated to California specifically. There is at least one other option, I prefer this one.

Seems fro about a year every time I have tried to read or post something the lag and timeouts were just to excruciating. Life is too short for the frustration.

Having built and managed a couple websites for 20 years or so, all I can say is that some service providers are SLOOOOWWW at upgrades and it leaves you as the webmaster feeling the pinch. On one site I used to manage, I had to switch service providers several times and it was a royal pain!!

I started with a local company then had to switch to Yahoo hosting then moved to BlueHost when Yahoo couldn't do the job. Finally moved to another company and held that location for a good long time.

The only real way to avoid all this is host your own servers but then you would need really good servers and infrastructure to your location to handle the traffic at a site like Calguns.

I know you all felt the pain of the transition but trust me, the folks who manage this site did the best they could with what they had.

Also, sometimes it becomes necessary to switch from one Forum app to another and they don't always allow you to "move" the data over so export/import can run you into the ground real quick.

Personally, I applaud our site hosts for getting through all this all the while everyone is complaining.

Calguns is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're going to get.

For me, this site took a total dump and was unusable for a long time. I used to check it daily, bought a few guns, posted a few times, etc., but the aggravation became too great, and I changed to checking weekly+.
It is gradually getting better, and I can now get on about 50% of the time. I like this forum, when it works. I hope it continues to improve.

I am not in the know, so can't speak much to the many months of troubles with lag and the new slightly less aesthetic UI and look, other than server migration and software upgrades were forced, and along with the huge 2+ decade sized existing database, it was very difficult. Things seem to finally be working now. (Hope I didn't just jinx it.)

As to the other CA guns forum that popped up in the mean time, I can offer my opinion on that. I tried it. The owners/mods gave me some seriously creepy politically correct authoritarian vibes. Not only is censorship the norm there, but they will even modify your posts and change your words. Totally unacceptable. I bailed quickly. Say what you want about Kes, but he lets *******s like me speak my mind here. Plus until it's gone, you have no idea how incredibly useful the marketplace forums are here. Even without iTrader, it's better than any other options for selling guns in California.

Totally agree with you here! Who the hell modifies your post(s) and change word(s)?

I have been meaning to check that page out, but it can probably wait a bit.

The functionality of CalGuns has been a disappointment, and the member ratings suck now. Lost 350+ ratings.

The old software was much better.
ATF Form 4473: If a frame or receiver can only be made into a long gun (rifle or shotgun), it is still a frame or receiver, not a handgun or long gun.

It's obvious that the owners of this site have given up. It's been a mess for a long time

Amen. Worked fine before all the migrations and funny business.
