Bringin AR15 To CA On A Trip

Hi,

New site I can't recall if I asked this before but important so here goes.

Full time RV'er and have to be in CA for about a week for a family emergency. In AZ and can't seem to store legally anywhere. IStorage facilities prohibit storing firearms plus they are like $200 what with deposit etc....

t's Sunday and I have to hit the road tomorrow.

IF I disassemble it and lock say lock the bolt in my truck and put lower in locked box in bed of truck and lock upper in trailer should I be OK? My appearance is typical 60yo professional retired Nice new Toyota truck and new Airstream trailer. Fully insured and all paperwork lined up. No red flags. I treat LEO with utmost respect. I haven't been pulled over in 30 years and can't imagine a situation where a deep search would be performed on me but ya never know!

If you plan on staying in CA (vs passing it via interstate) you have to make sure your AR-15 conforms to CA laws. In your case, you may want to separate the upper and lower, remove the stock, keep it separately. Also, you may not bring it 30-round mags, even disassembled (aka part kit).

Just zipping in and out for a family issue. 1 week in an RV park.

So with my above solutions remove the telescoping stock as well? As I said parts will be "hidden & scattered" from inside truck to bed of truck to inside trailer and mostly locked up. No 30rnd mags.

In fact I even have a 10 round bolt action Compmag magazine I can "permanently" affix in the magwell. If I'm at the point where an LEO is poking at the "glue" I secure the tightening screw and pin I figure I'm sunk anyways.

Man I have avoided CA for 4+ years to not go from law abiding citizen to felon but can't get out of this trip....

all you have to do is separate the upper from the lower. nothing more is needed. the doj has stated that an upper separate from a lower does not constitute a rifle.

Correct. Assuming its is not a named AW, Unloaded, in a locked container, and seperate the upper from the lower and you are good to go. No reason to dissasemble it beyond that. The locked container can be sitting in you lap on on your dash...it doesn't need to be in some particluar place or separated. Just have it out of sight because if LEO sees a gun case, they can force you to open it for inspection. Better off to just keep it out of sight.
