New member with anti-gun views, looking to open my mind and for some help!

    Hey everyone!

I'm alad, I left Canada last year to start a job down here in the bay area and I'd like to get into shooting!
I have a bit of a problem since most ranges here seem to require you to either:

    a) bring your own firearms (I can't since I'm not American)
    b) bring someone else (my friends are not as open minded as I am about firearms)

I'm pretty anti-gun myself, but I want to challenge my beliefs and try out shooting. I actually have a gun license in Canada that I got just before I moved down here, but you don't use any live weapons during the weekend-long course, so I never got the chance to try (and as a result, have forgot almost everything).

I'm wondering if anyone on here might be able to teach me and let me tag along to the range? I'd happily pay for gas and ammo!

I'm 4 hours away from the bay area but where I'm at there are a few instructors who will bring a selection of firearms to allow shooters to try different types. That is probably going to be your best bet.

agree with the people above. attending a basic pistol training will benefit you greatly. also, there's a san jose and bay area chapter sections here under calguns community forum.

Welcome! I'm up in Sacramento and often frequent The Gun Range on Watt avenue. If that's a reasonable trip for you I can meet you there and I can get you started with the basics. The Gun Range has an excellent selection of rentals, and I have a decent selection of stuff to shoot as well.

                  Welcome!

Keep in mind the 5 basic rules.A good link to read before hitting the range -

Protecting myself and those I care about is what first interested me about firearms. Given my goal of being more safe in more situations, it’d be ironic-and even very silly-of me to not take gun safety incredibly seriously. Regardless of what led to your involvement with firearms, whether you came from a similar place as…

In addition - Use common sense, listen to those who instruct you and don't be an azz. Its really pretty simple.

You'll also learn too that gun guys and gals are some of the friendliest people you'll ever meet.
We're not the stereotypical "slack jaw, uneducated redneck hillbillies" that the anti-gun zealots try to project us out to be.

                  Have fun!

To be fair, there ARE some of those. But that goes for any large group of people.

Thanks for the recommendation. My bias has most to do with my upbringing, generally liberal, grew up in a city etc etc.

Most gun ranges that rent guns will not rent to you if you come alone and you didn't already bring a gun with you. It's for suicide prevention.
