    unregistered handgun

Just wanted to see what you guys think. A friend of mine has this unregistered revolver. He got it from a friend of his about 25 year ago. We were talking about guns and he said if I wanted it, I can have it. He has no use for it. My question now is, should I take it? Do I need to register it? And, can I even register it?

    Thanks

It's okay for your friend to have an unregistered handgun.
It's okay for you to buy it.
Both of you go to an FFL together, pay $35, and you come back in 10 days to get your gun.
Never initiate force against another. That should be the underlying principle of your life. But should someone do violence to you, retaliate without hesitation, without reservation, without quarter, until you are sure that he will never wish to harm - or never be capable of harming - you or yours again.

One more question. My dad died in 1990, one of the things that I kept of his is a pistol. It wasn't registered back then and still isn't. Am I allowed to have that gun?

Yes. No paperwork was required at that time. If you want, you can send in an "Operation of Law" registration form and $19 and DOJ will register it in your name. Since you got it in 1990, that wasn't required at the time. It is for current transfers. You will need a Handgun Safety Certificate to submit this form. They are available at most gun stores, cost $25, and are good for five years.

Here is a link to the form:

Do I need to send the Operation of Law form? Or can I keep it unregistered?

Because you took possession prior to 1991, you are not legally required to send in the form.
So, yes, you can legally keep it unregistered.

No need to register the pistol you got from your father, it was a legal transfer at the time and the statue of limitations is 3 years so regardless you are good to go.

You will have to go to an ffl to transfer the revolver from your friend. You will need a handgun safety card if you don't already have one and the transfer fee will be $35. After 10 days you can pick up your gun.
