    Is .22 Hornet antiquated?

I buy a lot of guns, and obviously as a C&R type a lot of them have no "real use" as far as hunting or home defense etc. I recently saw a 1950's era bolt gun in .22 Hornet for $200. I'm thinking about picking it up just for the heck of it since it's a "cult" type caliber with a small but die hard following. It did get me to thinking though, what is it really good for? I've got a .22 LR, a .22 WMR, and a .223. There's nothing you woyld need a .22 for that one of those wouldn't handle.

.22 Hornet still have a place in the modern home arsenal?

The hornet was know as a barrel burner... truth be know; no worse than many current calibers. A gunsmith once said that most weren't burned out only copper fouled. I think it would be fun to have a 22 hornet.

      Question... showing my ignorance..

      I always thought a 22wmr was a Hornet.....

What's the difference? I had a Single Six OM that had the 22WMR and wow, what a cool sounding round. For a 22 - sounds like no other round.

The Hornet is a great little cartridge for hunting Rabbits, Coyotes,Fox and Bobcats it is a true 200-250 yrd cartridge but thats about it, though it will go further it's energy drops dramatically. Another good one is the 218 bee...

If you check out an image from google, the hornet is a very small bottle necked .22 round with a very long and slow taper to the neck. also, I believe its actually a centerfire round not a rimfire so you can reload it.

            It's an antique.

Nothing beats the ballistics of the .204 Ruger for the same range of game the Hornet was intended.

Thanks - when I was a kid - in our small town, they called magnums - hornets. I guess I've never seen a reall hornet round. Thanks for clarification.

It's sorta like a .25-20 necked down to .224, looks like a miniature .30-30 and the thinking was very similar.

yes its nearly as useless as a .410

yet when a gun combines them both it seems to redeem itself a tad
