    Transporting longgun to range?

I have an SKS that I recently purchased from the gun show. Since it is over 50 years old I was told I didn't need to wait around for a background check and I was able to leave with it the same day. I also bought a case for it, however its pretty obvious that I have a gun enclosed in the case besides the case itself being in digital camo.

My question is do I have to find some sort of lock for the case when I transport or not, and since my gun is over 50 should I retroactively seek a license or no?

Thanks in advance for all the help!

    License? For what?

You only need a lock if you are going through a gun free school zone and don't have it in locked trunk. I transport many long guns unlocked and in the cab of my truck. But, that's only when I know that I won't be violating federal law.

The age of your firearm has nothing to do with how it needs to be transported.

Cash and carry with a C&R over 50 years old in California is good to go. No you do not need (or way) to register it.

You do not need to lock it unless you are passing thru school zones (Federal law) and don't have a lockable trunk

Personally I lock all gun cases to create one more step for a cop that is insisting on a search..

I happen to live near a school so if its fully zipped up in its case UNLOADED on my way to put it in the trunk would that be illegal?

1,000 feet from the grounds of a public, parochial or private school. (26) The term “school” means a school which provides elementary or secondary education, as determined under State law.

Thanks chaos47, I think I will take extra precautions as you do.

Better safe than sorry around the school zones. Big public schools are usually easy to spot, but the small private school or school within a church might be less obvious as you pass by.
