if it is an antique, as defined by the PC, you do not need to register it.

Even if it's not an antique, if you legally own it, you don't have to register it. However...

You can file this form:
Voluntary Registration
Or, if it's over 50 years old, you could file this form:
Curio & Relics report form

Lot of questions there.

1) By what means did you acquire the pistol?

2) Why do you identify it as an antique?

For example, if you inherited an 18th century flintlock handgun, or an original Colt Single-Action Army (1873) no registration is required - for ownership and transfer purposes, neither feds nor CA consider those firearms (for use and carry, CA does call them firearms.)

For a second example, if it were a 1930 Colt Police Positive, and you bought it from a CA-licensed FFL, the DROS process has already registered it to you.

For a third example, if you have a C&R license and you went out of state to buy any of those, and brought it back to CA, you would need to file a form with CA-DOJ for the 1930 gun, but I don't think you must for the pre 1898 guns.
