UBBT's are perfectly legal (and the manufacturers are awesome people). They cannot be used when attached to the gun. It would be the same if you could unscrew your muzzle break and use that to drop mags, or use a bullet stored in your pistol grip.

Attached, its part of the gun, not attached, tool, and never the twain shall meet.

Last year my cousin and some uncles went to Ice House to camp. My cousin asked if he can borrow my California legal AR15, equipped with the prince50 bullet button. I told him he can as long as he feeds it and don't use any magazines other then the ones I'm lending him(don't know if he has or has friends who may have hi capacity AR mags). A few days later he returned my AR with 3 of my 10/20 Pmags. My cousin told me that a DFG deputy approached them on the first day right after they finished shooting and went directly to the AR15. The deputy asked to inspect it and my cousin allowed him to. After looking over the AR the deputy said "you know it's illegal to hunt with this gun right?" My cousin replied "I don't know, I borrowed it from my cousin to target practice with it only." After that the deputy asked to look into their coolers. They allowed it then he left. When my cousin told me that I started laughing and told him that the deputy don't know anything and that my AR is perfectly legal to hunt with. Due to the bullet button it's considered a long gun and technically it's no longer an "AR15" and its really an "AR15" clone.

        No, they can't.

It's unlitigated grey area. I've said it before, a good prosecutor might be able to convince a jury that one of these "tools" is not a tool since it's not "held", but affixed to your finger (as a digit replacing "prosthetic device").

But unlike many other OLL issues we're solidly backed up with penal code, this isn't one of them. Nobody knows how such a trial would go down. Anybody that says they're 100% legal is fudging. We don't know.

That a LEO asked about it specifically makes me wonder if there's a DA out there looking for a test case. Otherwise, it's just too weird of a request.

And went to put it in the car because we were picking up. I get back to the table and a fish and game officer came over. He asked me how my day was and I said fine. he then asks what I'm shooting and I tell him a 22 shotgun and a 5.45. I knew he wanted to know about the ar and figured I wasn't lieing when I said 5.45. He then asked about the ar and asks to see it. I tell him it's in the car and would be no problem. I then pull it out to show and all he does is put his figure on the bullet button. then says he's just checking to see if I had a Nevada ar. I laugh and say nope all legal here. then for some reason he asked if I was using one of those finger tip tools . I say no I use just use a bullet and he was on his way. The only thing that struck me funny was his last comment. I wish I would have asked him what it meant.

Like people tho many are uninformed and you can be opening yourself up to a legal battle that you may win but will cost you.
And not volunteering information can cost you too, like getting arrested and then getting your car searched.....

Don't get be wrong, I agree with you! But up holding your rights can be expensive!
