Kimber Ultra Covert II, Slide lock back

While shooting at the range today, the slide on my Kimber Ultra Covert II kept locking back. I thought it was my magazine so I used 6 different magazines, and was able to recreate the problem.

What I found: the slide release/lock was holding the slide back. It was just slightly engaged. I would post it (slide release) down, and the slide would act as expected by sliding forward and chambering the nest round.

This happened with different magazines and different ammo.

Again, the slide release was only slightly engaged.

One other thing, I've found this handgun to hit slightly low, is this common?

Premature slide lock+Kimber is like Salt and Pepper - they just go together. As the rounds come up in the magazine, they are hitting the slide lock from the inside, forcing it up and causing the slide to lock back. Common problem, especially where MIM parts are involved. I dealt with it on my TLE II several years ago. I dressed the slide stop and that was that.

The fix? After a bunch of rounds, unload and tear down the pistol and look at the inner part of the slide stop - you should see some copper smudges (assuming you were shooting FMJ or JHP ammo).

*LIGHTLY* stone (not file, but stone) down the offending surface of the slide stop a bit at a time. It's going to be a trial and error thing, so take a LITTLE material off at a time, test, repeat, etc. Alternative is to send it back and let Kimber deal with it. If you are not comfortable with the 1911-style platform, let the folks at Kimber deal with it.

As for POA vs. POI, drop it in a Ransom Rest (or use lots of sandbags) and make sure it's the pistol and not you. If it's the pistol, take a little off the front sight with a file. Not uncommon. I know several Kimber owners who have done this.

BTW - if you want a bunch of good 1911's brains to chime in, check 1911forum.com if you haven't already. Those guys eat, breathe, sh*t and f**k 1911's for a living. Good info there.

Or you could make sure your not thumbing it while shooting. Call Kimber if it's an actual problem with the piece their CS is outstanding. Soo I have heard anyway my Kimber has run like a champ. As for PoI mine hits whats covered.

My custom II was doing the same thing, it's an out of spec slide stop. I called Kimber and a new slide stop was on my door step 3 days later. Call them, they'll make it right
