help me choose a 17 HMR

I am looking to buy a 17 HMR and I cannot decide between a Savage, a Henry or a Ruger. Any help, opinions or comments would be appreciated. Just gonna be a general plinking gun.

I have never owned a Henry, so that is appealing, but I'm not sure I want a lever action. I think (not know) that a bolt action is slightly more accurate.

Savage or CZ. Forget the Ruger or Henry. I'm assuming you want a bolt action. A bolt action is A LOT more accurate.

ETA: If just a plinking gun and tight bullseye is not a criteria, forget 17 and go with a 22. The Ruger is a good plinker. 17 is EXPENSIVE!

Why not just get a .223?

            CZ hands down.

The 453 has an awesome fully adjustable set-trigger, or the 455 can be converted to 22lr, 22 mag, 17 hmr, and 17 m2.

I have a Ruger 77/17 that I really like and have shot the Savage quite a bit as well. Though I think both would be good choices, I think you'll get a better gun with the CZ.

Thank you for all of the responses. I never even considered the CZ, but I now will. The 455 sounds like a good gun.

I already have a couple of .223's and .22's. I was just looking for something new. A friend has a Savage and he really likes it.

Some of the ones that I looked at (in the lower price range) seemed really cheap and poorly made.

My Savage with the accu-trigger has been simply a great gun! I have it in a Boyds stock and it has eradicated many a squirrel.

I hear great things about the CZ as well, probably can't go wrong either way.

I have a Savage 93r17 and LOVE it. My coworker has a Henry Golden Boy in .17 and its just not as accurate. The Henry is a good looking gun though.

If its just for plinking why not get a .22? The cost of ammunition will allow you to be able to have fun a lot longer for a lot cheaper. But hey to each its own.

I have a Savage 93r17 .17HMR and couldn't be any more pleased with the accuracy, weight of the rifle and the trigger pull with the Accutrigger. Consistent groupings and high velocity. The ammo for .17's are anywhere from 10$-15$ a box of 50, so it's expensive but it's a bolt action, so you don't shoot too much anyway. I would recommend it to anyone. Good luck and when you decide put up some pics man!

Well, I will be the odd man out here. I bought a Marlin 917 and love it, except the trigger was a bit stiff. I solved that by installing an aftermarket trigger from Rifle Basix, which was a snap and it makes a good rifle even better. Very accurate like most small bore rifles.
