Hi all,
New here. New gun owner, new everything. I live in Solano County, but work in San Francisco. With that said, I'm curious, why does the mere image of a weapon system, be it a .22LR or a 5.56mm, etc scare the bejeebus out of people?
You mention "gun", have a picture of a gun, post a picture of you shooting a gun and people freak out. I've been a non-gun owner most of my life and this never happened to me. Perhaps, I am a little nutty, but I simply don't get it. Guns, per se are tools, they, by themselves do not hurt or kill people. It is the operator of the said weapon system.
I would completely understand if a person has been accosted by another using a gun to be afraid of an image of the person, but why the gun? Do people who hurt themselves with a hammer, a screwdriver or a saw develop a phobia to such tools? Or perhaps a fishing accident, does that mean they can no longer walk inside a sporting good store? When I decided to purchase a firearm for the fun of shooting it in the range and to exercise my 2nd Amendment and perhaps to defend my family and myself, people, close friends flipped out. They all thought I was crazy. "You live in a good neighborhood, why would you need a gun?"
True, had I lived somewhere, where a prerequisite of residence would be to own a firearm, I think I would move. However, the fallacy or the elephant standing in the room is that a good neighborhood does not mean one will not be endanger. Using the same mentality, why would you buy car insurance if you are a safe driver and only drive 10 miles a day- max? For the unknown, which in this case, the unfortunate outcome would not only be unacceptable, but unforgettable, should my family be harmed.
To add, many years ago, when we sold our first home, I had some of my airsoft AR's hanging in my garage, my sanctuary, man-cave. The realtor asked me to bring them down, because people looking at the house were freaking out. Some so much that they were trembling. Really?
I understand I am preaching to the choir, but I figure I try expressing this frustration with people that are more likely to agree with me, than those that will make the prejudicial conclusion that if I own a firearm, I am crazy. To that, of course, I would refer to the 2nd Amendment. Why are Californians, especially, the ones that lean more Left (I'm a progressive, FYI) or people in general so afraid?
