I think you can just apply and learn on the job but you could also get NRA certification, that wouldn't hurt.

The NRA offers a Range Safety Officers course. It would be a good place to start.
If you are a current NRA Certified Instructor, it can be taken via mail.

It's not that fun and kinda dangerous. I hated running into the giggly newbie shooter who was too embarrassed to ask any questions and tried to compensate by acting like they knew what they were doing.

One time during a USPSA practice a newbie caught the gun on a port, even after I told him to watch out for it, and I ended up staring straight down the bbl. Had to kick him out and that's not fun either.

Most places offer perks so it sometimes makes up for the annoyance.

You don't say where you are. Many ranges are run by volunteers trained by the club that runs the range. All the RSOs at Livermore are volunteers.Club pays for the class.RSOs pay for NRA certification if they want it.Rangemaster is usually most experienced RSO on duty.

I worked at one of my local ranges for almost 3 years during college. I was responsible for the store, but also rotated down at the range. I sold too many guns, so they liked me managing the store It came with some nice perks. I got everything at cost, so I was able to pickup some pretty nice guns. Also, some people just don't want their guns and they want to sell them. Id be honest with them that they could get more selling it private party. They would tell me what they wanted and my boss let me get first dibs. If I wanted it I could buy it or he'd buy it if I didn't want it. Picked up a pretty much new Glock 20 for $300, a S&W 686+ for $350, Sig 226 with a broken extracter for $150, and a few nice rifles.

I also got a LTC because my boss wrote me a letter because I transported money, firearms, and had access to all of the guns in the store. At the time I was the youngest LTC holder in Sac county and there were only 250. It was like winning the lottery..lol

I had access to the range anytime I wanted and would shoot before and after work. My friends could come out and join me without paying range fees.

To this day I still shoot for free and get things for cost. I don't have any regrets because it was a lot of fun. You will have idiots, but just don't let your guard down. Make sure the range you work at has a buddy rental gun requirement because suicides happen with rentals, if there isn't a policy.

Forgot to mention how I got the job. I was a regular because I worked at the CA DOJ a few miles away. They noticed my knowledge of guns and I'd just help people on the range and helped make some recommendations for gun purchases. Next thing I know they had an opening and they hired me. It was all on the job training and its not rocket science. Pretty much comes down to common sense.

Not an online class. You are shown how to safely clear stoppages in a variety of gun types. You have to show that you can do it to the instructor. There was a lot of hands on training. Was an informative class.
