Wrong, read the whole post. I never said anything like just flash your piece & they will stop. I said that the sight of a drawn gun will wake up some would be attackers & stop them from doing bad things. If you pull your gun & they stop advancing (or other threatening actions) upon you, then you don't have the moral right to shoot them if they are only armed with a knife. You may have a legal right (depends on LE/DA/jury), but not the ethical right to shoot.

I agree on the racking the pump, that just gives your position away & lets the bad guy know what you are armed with. Self defense guns should always have a round in the chamber ready to go.

A lot of people have been killed with that round. Better than nothing. Shot placement, period.

Within 3 or 5 feet, you probably will have barely any time to react anyway. Sounds like you're asking the wrong question here. In such a scenario, the skills you need to learn are self defense moves.

this is about the distance most attacks happen...so if you can't really react, then why carry anything? a .45 isn't gonna do you any good if you don't have time to pull it right??

The best self defense move you can learn is to push someone back, grab your gun, point, and shoot. I guarantee they'll be about 3'-5' away for that...

Is your firearm drawn and ready at that distance? If not, you probably wouldn't even get a single shot off.

again, then why carry any gun? do you guys live somewhere that criminals announce themselves from a distance? because what i've seen and heard has always been a close quarters attack....if someone's more than 5' away it's hard to say they were attacking you...unless their arms are 7' long or they're shooting at you.

to the op- I don't see a point to tiny mouse guns, the kahr pm9 is ridiculously concealable.

i guarantee you it's not as concealable as my Astra Cub .25acp. I CCW it frequently and can hide it in an IWB holster on my board shorts covered by a wife beater (though i wouldn't be caught dead in a wife beater, I have done the conceal experiment with one and found it more than sufficient).

OP: a .25 would be fine, provided it's accurate at the distances you described, and YOU UNDERSTAND THE LIMITATIONS OF THE GUN!! You're not gonna have much of a chance at 20', but you'll probably generate enough fear by shooting at your attacker that they'll abandon their attempt to harm you. Of course this unfortunately means you're pretty likely to be sending rounds at innocent bystanders behind your target...something to keep in mind.

when i took my CCW class i read about a case in which two guys got caught stealing a stereo from a car, then were chased by the owners. One of the thiefs was caught and beaten savagely, then other got away, then came back and shot at the guys who chased them with a .25acp. One of the attackers died from a single .25acp wound to the abdomen. So yeah, it can do the trick, but don't expect a miracle every time you shoot it....

when i carry my .25 i know it's a GTFO gun....it's not meant for me to stand my ground and drop some bad guys. If i heard a bump in the night i'm not gonna grab my .25 and investigate... it's meant to give me the advantage so that I can escape the situation unharmed and get somewhere safe. I'm just shooting center mass and running away. If i were carrying my G23 or 1911 I would have more of a "fighting chance", but that's where being mindful of your limitations is VERY important when carrying a gun. No different than being able to judge at what distance you can empty a mag into a BG's chest with no flyers, and what distance you'd have to be on a bench with sandbags and stabilizers to have a prayer of hitting your target. You should know those distances, and know all the distances in between them and be mindfull of them if you ever find yourself in a defensive situation. your accuracy will be worse in a surprise defensive situation than your worst day at the range, so be prepared, and train yourself to know your capabilities and limitations so you don't make a stupid mistake.

Any gun is better than no gun, and i'd rather have a gun than a knife, but if you can't get to your gun in time and/or you don't know the best way to effective use your gun, you shouldn't carry one at all.

The old pre-pot-metal .25s tend to get higher velocities with the same ammo also.

If you chronograph them, they come out a bit better than the Raven/Davis/Bryco guns. I suspect the bores are tighter.

You always carry the biggest round you can be accurate with, with that said I think you should take into consideration what if you need penitration example the threat is behind a car door meaning you need to shoot into a door. You need to think of stuff like that to its not only about stopping power, remember we try to prepre in our minds for as many senerios we can think of and prepare our self for that. Just my 2 cents
