Pelican Cases - Reviews, Thoughts, Worth the $

Curious to see if anyone owns them and uses them for gun storage and transport. The waterproofing features are great for cameras and electronic equipment, but do you really need that for weapons?

    Thanks

I have a small one I use for transporting a handgun in my checked bag when I fly. I got it more for the security then the waterproof issue, and being plastic the bag screeners can still see it on the Xray vs. a metal container they'd prolly always want to visibly inspect.

For airline transport I think they'd be tough to beat.

Yes, I use them and their great for transporting on an airplane. I actually have several in various sizes all the up to the 1650.

If it can protect cameras and electronics worth thousands of dollars, then doesn't your guns deserve the same protection?

I have a "medium" size pelican(1470 I think?) that I use for handguns. I like it. I'd have rifle size pelican cases as well but storing those would get ridiculous.

Thanks for the responses. I have not had any need to bring a gun on a flight. I think they are really well made and for me would serve a dual purpose for camera as well as pistols.

I have a truck with a hard locking fiberglass cover (away from prying eyes) and I transport my rifles in a couple of 1750's in the bed. I can be confident that there will be no damage when I get to my destination. If you are near a military base you can find used ones cheaper but without the foam. I wouldn't transport my rifles any other way.

Worth it. Use one for my rifles when flying to hunt. TSA has yet to do anything more than scratch it.
Have one for my laptop that has taken some abuse, another for a camera that has taken a beating as well.
I plan on picking up a few more to round out the collection...

You can get away with the cheap Plano cases if it's just going to be in your trunk. The construction isn't nearly as solid [plastic for hinge pins, etc]. However I wouldn't trust the cheaper Plano models for transport on a plane. I know they have some more expensive models, but when you get to that price point I'd just go with a Pelican.

I bought the #1495CC1 laptop case and love it. I also use it to transport handguns and ammo to the range. Its heavy when loaded, but I am glad I bought it.

1170 is what I have for airline travel. It will hold a full sized Glock or 1911, a box of ammo and an extra magazine.

Pelican cases with foam are for transport only. Do not store firearms for great lengths of time inside them. The foam inside will contribute to moisture and rusting. Same goes for any foam case, not just Pelican.

I have about 10 pelican cases I use for work. If I am doing a shoot(photography) at the beach when I arrive home I set my cases on my driveway and spray them down with a garden hose to clean the sand off.
If anything breaks on them Pelican will replace for free.
