Sighting in a rifle

I have a mossburg 30-06 and seem to have trouble sighting it in. I know that a better scope is needed but just want general tips on the most efficient way to get it dialed in. I have been starting at the 50 yd to get it centered left and right then move to the 100 yd to get the elevation dialed
Any tips would be greatful

Bore sight the rifle at 10yds or so. Pick a spot on your target, look down the barrel, and dial the scope to the same spot.

Put target at 100yds, fire rifle, dial poi to poa, and your zeroed.

Make sure your base and rings are tight, and your scope reticle is square to the rifle bore.

start at 25 yards from a bench. If it's not already been bore sighted, remove the bolt from the receiver and while looking through the bore of the rifle, position the rifle so the center of the target is centered in the bore. Without moving the rifle, adjust the sights so that they are on the same spot. That will get you on the paper.

use 3 shot strings to get your group. Adjust your sights to center these groups to the point of aim on the target. With a 30-06 and most other high power rifles, that will put you on target again at between 225 - 250 yds, assuming you are using a scope.

Move your target to 100 yds and check for windage and elevation; adjust as necessary. Your rounds should be 2.5 to 3 inches high at that range.

I spent 20 minutes helping a guy sight in his rifle and less than 1/2 an hour later, he comes over to my bench and tells me his sight is loose.

Easy fix, but easier to prep so you don't have to fix

As has been said. Take the bolt out and look down the bore. Do it carefully and you can start at 100 yards. It's very rare for me to take more than 3 shots to get a gun into the 10 ring.

I'd go as far as saying that even blue loctite shouldn't be necessary if you use a torque wrench. 30 inch pounds and screws on scoperings aren't going to be backing themselves out.
