What are the advantages of ranges that are members only and disadvantages. I live in Modesto and the only one here is members only. Why not open it to the public? The chances of me becoming a member I heard is slim to none. I don't mind going to the one in Manteca. I also heard Turlock is members only. Barnwood is good for pistols. I just figure open to the public would bring more revenue, but also I understand more crap to deal with. Just not sure.

Probably exclusivity, and cuts down on those new shooters who like to waive their guns around and take pictures of themselves in 20 different poses

I would rather pay for a private membership to limit the number of people at the range and to weed out the occasional shooters. To me, it seems safer that way. My thought being that if people won't fork over a couple hundred for a membership they are not serious shooters.NRA Life Member

I agree. But becoming a member is dam near impossible for private ranges. That part sucks.I would rather pay for a private membership to limit the number of people at the range and to weed out the occasional shooters. To me, it seems safer that way. I think insurance may also be a consideration on the public vs private ranges.
Turlock sportsman club is around $100 and 4 work days a year. They take new members in February, I think.
It's nothing fancy and gets flooded out some times, but I like it.
I've never had to wait on a lane and a few times, on week days, I've had the place all to myself for the whole day.
sweet.
They also have river access an RV camping.

You never know until you try.
I tried and got into a private range club and it's been twenty years of membership.
The good part is we have no range master and all the members have a key. Show up and shoot. No hassles and lots of fun with friends.^^ Said by some lunatic on the internetComment

Escalon Sportsmans club has a range for members. Becoming a member is easy and the cost is $50 or $75 per year(I forgot which). If you would like to go try it or join let me know.A 30cal will reach out and touch them. A 50cal will kick their butt.
