    DETACHABLE MAGS

I've read the rules and I want to be FOR SURE that this is legal... Is it legal if I get a saiga 7.62x39 and assuming I keep it stock except for maybe a red dot sight or rail, and do not put any of the prohibited features (pistol grip, flash hider ect..) on it then is it legal in CA for me to have detachable mags for it?

Right. If you successfully keep it featureless, detachable mags and using the stock mag release are legal.

Just make sure you don't go attaching a VFG to that forward rail. Its best to not test that law with anything called a grip in any way....palm stop, hand stop, bi-pod (not a grip pod) are all ok. I have seen several Featureless Stock rifles (Mini-14s, Saigas, Camp-9s) with VFGs and its a one way ticket to court if the wrong LEO sees it.

Only use a Vertical Fore Grip with a maglock and 10 round mags.

              Penal Code 12276.1.
              (a) Notwithstanding Section 12276, "assault weapon" shall also mean any of the following:
              (1) A semiautomatic, centerfire rifle that has the capacity to accept a detachable magazine and any one of the following:
              (A) A pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action of the weapon.
              (B) A thumbhole stock.
              (C) A folding or telescoping stock.
              (D) A grenade launcher or flare launcher.
              (E) A flash suppressor.
              (F) A forward pistol grip.
Read the law. And know it.
Flow chart is great for showing people how things work but you need a deep understanding of these things if you are going to justify to a police officer why your rifle is legal

Hammerhead is GTG again I urge you to read the law and understand it for yourself.

                    From SB23 (PDF)
grasp in which the web of the trigger
hand (between the thumb and index finger) can be placed below the top of the
exposed portion of the trigger while firing.
Hammerheads allow a grip above the top of the exposed portion of the trigger

Btw if you are looking into featureless build's may I suggest you check out my featureless build guide:

You really do need to read a bit more before you plunge into the world of modern rifles, EBRs and BRD. It may take a few days, but its all right here. Please don't ask what EBR and BRD are... SEARCH & READ.

Only use 10 rounders. If you want to use your legal AK hi caps if you have any,the gun needs to be 922r compliant.

I did a search and couldnt find anything. I understand that if you have a featureless AR, you can use 10plus round mags. But do they have to be preban mags? I know that its illegal to sell them but its ok to own and use them as long as the rifle is featureless. I was wondering because i purchased some 30rd kits and there was a disclosure note that was in the package that stated that it was unlawfull to assemble in CA. I it because that mag is postban? Can I own postban 30rd mags if i dont have a featureless? What if I have both, a featureless and one that does with bullet button?

Thanks Turby for the Link! So what i interpret from reading that, I had to have owned the large cap mag PRIOR to Jan 1, 2000. So basically any kit that I purchase and assemble after that date would be illegal? Correct? I'm not a lawer or anything so i just want to know if my interpretations are correct. How can one prove if a mag was owned prior to that date?
