    44 Magnum Ammunition Testing

We were out at the range this Saturday testing a limited production run of 44 Magnum ammunition. We used a Ruger Super Blackhawk revolver chambered in 44 Mag, and an Oehler Research Model 35P chronometer. The average speed of our 44 Magnum using a 240gr double struck copper plated lead FP bullet was 1135 fps. Photos from the shoot are located here: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?...3&l=0834f26b52

    Edit:
Ruger Super Blackhawk Revolver with target adjustable sights chambered in 44 Magnum with a 6" barrel.
Average speed of 1135 feet per second on a 240gr TMJ (Double struck, copper plated lead bullets) as measured by an Oehler Research Model 35P Proof Chronometer.
These were made using reloaded once-fired 44 Magnum Brass and a Hodgdon Extreme powder. We gave away the brass after we were done to someone who wanted it..

cool story. What is your conclusion. That seems slow for 44 mag.

      The conclusion is very simple:

My guess would be plated bullets + used brass = mild target load?

As for velocity, don't believe everything the powder manufacturers tell ya. That 240gr @1500 fps figure in the manual is probably out of a 16" sealed test barrel.

Real world chrono out of a real world revolver is usually slower.

        240gr @ 1100+ sounds like a fun target load.

Doesn't specify powder either. Hodgdon's Extreme powders are rifle powders according to their website.

1135 fps on a 240 grain bullet seems like a nice midrange load, particularly out of a Super Blackhawk. Just slightly over what might be considered a warm to slightly hot .44 Special load, IMO.

I don't have my data at hand but it is similar to my midrange load. I use a 240 grain lead round nose from Bear Creek and 9.0 grains of Unique. I think that is a little over 1,000 fps. Recoil is easily controlled, I don't get any leading, and it's fun to shoot. Accuracy is adequate for my needs.
