    Question about shotgun shells

Is there a difference between 12 guage 9 pellet 00buckshot and 12 guage home defense shells? There seems to be a huge difference in price between the 2, however it seems they both have the same specs. Thanks

What size pellets does the home defense shell have? Not sure if 00 buck is the best choice for home defense (depending on where you live) due to possible over penetration. A close range as most home shooting is done, smaller pellets will work just as good. Check out the duckbill muzzle spreaders made for SEAL's in Vietnam by China Lake. They had to be used with #4 shot & changed the pattern to a 4:1 horizontal spread. If I was going to use a scattergun for home defense, I'd use an old Ithaca 37, extended tube, with a duckbill. With practice, "slam fire" at the hip can be very fast. The issue with a shotgun for home defense is the length. IMO a high capacity 9mm pistol like a Glock with preban 33rd mags is a better choice. Use good ammo like Cor-Bon.

      There can be.

The defensive load may have harder / plated shot, may have a snazzier shot cup to produce tighter patterns, or may use a more expensive powder for optimization in short barrels or recoil control.

All of this, however, is useless if your shotgun doesn't like the load (especially if it won't cycle reliably with it). Fortunately for a pump or a double, the odds of a shotgun not liking a buckshot load are remote.

In my personal defensive scattergun I use Hornady TAP reduced recoil 00 buck. But in a pinch, regular ol' hunting buckshot is probably 90% as good. Shoot both and see which one works better for you, then buy a case.

If you actually aim your HDSG and your at the nominal defense range of a max. of 7 yards shouldn't really matter what you use but yes there are differances. the HD loads are lighter should be 2 3/4 chamber-7 1/2 shot or bb's http://www.thegunsandgearstore.com/u...e-p-15914.html

Inside a house, some bird shot will work just as good. Buck shot, as the name suggests is for outdoor use, where you want to get at least a few pellets on target at longer range. Try shooting your shotgun at 7 yards and see how small the pattern is. You'll come to the conclusion, that bird shot will work and that you better aim at your target because the spread is small.

Yes there is a differance...Someone had a chart that showed the shot size care to post that again?
