*UPDATED* I didn't think these people actually existed... updated w/ new shenanigans

So my sister and her new boyfriend came into town to visit and have the new guy meet the family... He's apparently never been shooting before and she asked me weeks ago if I would take them to the range while they were in town... Since I like to get the safety and function schpiels with new shooters out of the way before we get to the range so they have some basic competence before we get there. I hand him my unloaded firearm and start explaining to him how to unload the firearm (safety check), how to load (with snap caps), how to grip, how to aim, etc. He cut me off and says "Oh, I know how all this works. I watch a lot of action movies and play a lot of video games." _)49*W_)(U%_%*&@%_#@_%#)*^7-)(-098-09&)&^)@&^%_)82#5 WHAT?!?!?!?!?

Needless to say, we're not going to the range tomorrow.

The string of profanity or the bit about not going to the range? I told him we're not going to the range...

Everyone I take to the range gets a "safety meeting" if they don't grasp the concept, they don't go in reality...

If your goal was really to impart a bit of safety and have a really fun day introducing a new person to shooting, I think you stopped early...It is too bad that you didn't try a bit harder to impose a bit of reality on him.

Did you have him show you, and him get it wrong? Or did you just say "sure" and ended the discussion?

Actually... you have a very good point. What's the consensus? Should I tell the guy to pound sand or should we try the lesson again today in the hopes that reality sets in and we have (maybe) another on our side?

Amen bother. I can understand the comedic side of what you were doing but if this is you being real, that sucks. NOW, if he didn't want to listen thats something else. You did the right thing. But if the only problem was your patience-you missed out on taking a gun "cherry" and getting someone else involved in this great thing we all love called " gun ownership. "
Create a law that says gun control only applies to criminals.

Try another lesson. It sounds like what he said was innocent enough. He was trying to relate his experience (as superficial as it may be) to what he was learning from you.

You have a great opportunity to create another safe gun enthusiast who will go on to support our 2a rights. Dont give up!

I am a teacher and it is true that tapping into prior knowledge is an important part of teaching. He very well may have just been trying to relate his prior knowledge to what you were saying.

                            Try again, I say.

I'd try again like the other posters have said. Just make sure to impart how dangerous firearms can be, you could try showing some youtube videos of slam firing, or double firing, general scary stuff if your not maintaining gun safety.
