I WILL tell you stay out of Orange County. I got hasseled for having a store bought Springfield M1A WITH the original DROS papers and store reciept. Some have told me I shouldnt have said anything, but then if I didnt.... LEO has more games than Milton Bradley, and I would lose. http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s...d.php?t=548659
Keep the flow chart on you, be cooperative, and show LEO you know the rules and you should be fine.

Question: does anyone have a link to the ATF FAQ page that I have noticed referenced several times on Calguns?

Which FAQ do you keep with you. The ATF used to have a direct answer to the question on their website. I cant find it anymore.

I usually go shooting with a close friend (LEO) now retired (LEO) i have never seen him check other peoples guns at the range

we just shoot and leave when done. but then every LEO are different.

I also have a friend who I grew up with who is LAPD and he knows i built an AR all he said was nice, lets go shooting when you visit me

^ Please think about it. I can type something up for you, print it out on any letterhead you want... do you really think an Officer is NOT going to arrest you because you have a piece of paper?...

But But BUT,... Officer, read this, JacktheNinja on blahblahblahguns.net told me it was ok. I have this copy of a law from the internet...

Read the laws. Understand the laws. Research the laws. Then when you are questioned you can articulate who what where and why you are able to do what you did. That will matter more than some folded paper you keep in your gun case.

If you are not willing to invest in the knowledge that goes along with building personal firearms... DON'T do it. Just go buy a firearm.
