Dumb question: Can I ship ammo?

I have a friend in another state who recently told me that he is getting his first handgun for Christmas and will be taking a NRA course early in the new year. So, for a gift, I've put together a little care package for him: eye and ear protection, the S&W 3rd edition Catalog, a shooting glove, some targets, and a basic cleaning kit. I was going to throw in a box of 50 rounds of .38 special and was about to wrap it up and mail it off when it occurred to me: Can I legally ship this ammo or is ATF going to come crashing through my door? I often have ammo shipped to me from online vendors, but of course they are probably licensed. The gift is fine without the ammo, but I just thought I would double check: Can I mail this?

No problem shipping ammo as long as you use FedEx, DHL, UPS, ect.
Anybody EXCEPT the US Postal Service....there it is against the law.

side anecdote: one XMas while in the Army, I was stationed on an Air Force base in Germany and had returned from Saudi (DS). I got assigned a duty as overnight-shift to the base mail facility unloading the mail trucks and doing basic package sorting and stuff, just grunt work you know. One night we were unloading and I picked up smallish package and out fell (fell, as in the ****tiest packaging job ever) a 1911-shaped semi that someone just stuck in a box and mailed. We found another one from the same guy, had to turn 'em in, file a report etc... people will mail anything.

Firearms are indeed allowed in the mail. The average "joe" can send longguns only but FFL holders can also send handguns as well.

Not through a military APO (overseas) they cannot, it isn't (well, wasn't at the time this was 15+ yrs ago now) allowed. The Sgt in charge had to talk to a whole bunch of people about it (who had touched the weapons, who found them, who reported it, etc.) so that they could rule out us workers as being complicit in the affair. Since I had physically touched it my entire details were turned over, I bet they checked fingerprints as well (but I don't know, just a lowly enlisted man).

Stick with UPS or FedEx Ground.

DHL is not firearms or ammunition friendly. Their latest tariff says ammo is prohibited...
